The Junior Sister/ Charge Nurse is expected to support and lead staff within the Adult EmergencyDepartment. This role carries the continuing responsibility for the management of the department,working alongside the Senior sisters.The post holder will assist nursing staff with management requirements ensuring that a quality serviceis maintained. S/he is expected to participate in education throughout the unit and hospital andensure quality is maintained.The Junior Sister / Charge Nurse will work to ensure that high quality care provided is delivered in asafe environment. The role also includes the continuing responsibility for the effective delivery of thephilosophy, policies, standards of care and morale of the department in line with the Trust values -Excellence, Respect, Kindness and Safety.The Junior Sister / Charge Nurse will work with and support the team in the Emergency Departmentensuring that all patients are provided with a safe and high quality standard of care. They will beaware of the Care Quality Commission standards and support the multi-disciplinary team ensuring thatthey are maintained.

You will be given a structured orientation to meet your individual needs to develop as a Paediatric A& E nurse.

Job responsibilities

  • Clinical/ Professional Role:
  • Working autonomously whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, assessing and managing a caseload of patients within the Emergency department.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • To act as a role model of expert clinical practice.
  • To participate in the initial assessment and streaming of all patients attending the department advising care needs in accordance to the clinical evidence available.
  • Inform patients of expected time waits in accordance with Patient Charter Standards.
  • To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard.
  • Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.
  • To initiate care and treatment for all patients on an individual basis assessing care needs, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care using researched-based practiceand agreed nursing model.
  • To manage the department in the absence of the senior staff or as part of a planned development demonstrating effective time management and leadership skills.
  • Seek advice where known expertise is available in a dynamic approach to problem solving.
  • To work with the multi-disciplinary team to proactively identify areas for improving nursing practice and service delivery.
  • Ensures the safe custody, maintenance and administration of drugs in accordance with Law and established Trust procedure


Person Specification

APPLICATION FORM

  • Registered Nurse
  • Mentoring/Assessing qualification or willingness to undertake
  • Post-Registration qualification in Emergency Nursing or equivalen
  • Ability to coordinate and lead nursing care in individual areas of the emergency department
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with the patients the multidisciplinary team emergency services and the outside agencies necessary for the efficient running of the department

  • Ensure correct use of IT system, and be aware of the importance of information
  • Able to recognise the potential for physical or verbal violence and take action to defuse the situation.
