Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) are one of the leading health boards in Wales on the promotion of arts therapies within health care. Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) have recently confirmed fixed term funding until the end of March 2025 to develop a professional lead role for arts therapies. The role consists of 4 sessions per week (15 hours per week).

The post holder will provide strategic direction for the delivery and ongoing development of an evidence-based, comprehensive set of arts therapies services for the population of Gwent, in line with the strategic objectives of ABUHB and with a full understanding of the potential impact on other services across the Health Board.

The professional lead for arts therapies will be responsible for establishing effective and accountable structures to ensure compliance with clinical, managerial, risk and financial governance requirements. This includes management across a number of departments and a range of service level agreements. They will develop a successful and efficient service delivery model for arts therapies.

Applicants will need to hold current HCPC registration as an arts therapist (Art Psychotherapist, Art Therapist, Dramatherapist, and/or Music Therapist). The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Main duties of the job

The professional lead for arts therapies will be responsible for the delivery of arts therapies services across Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB). This post holder will be responsible for strategic development, service delivery and governance for arts therapy services. This will include proactively contributing to the development of strategy, management of financial plans, targets and staff resources. This post will outline a template that might be utilised by other Health Board's that will promote the application of arts therapies in health care across Wales.

The professional lead for arts therapies will be required to identify the strategic direction for the service and to work collaboratively with key stakeholders and external agencies to specify needs, identify priorities, and establish partnership arrangements and networks for service delivery. This will be achieved in conjunction with the Joint Heads of Psychology, Counselling, and Arts Therapies and Director of Therapies and Health Sciences. This service model will potentially impact on all residents within Gwent who access NHS resources.

Job responsibilities

Fundamental within this role is a responsibility to ensure that there is a relevant system for performance management for all aspects of the change processes and team development and accountability for the provision of an operationally effective arts therapies services. Alignment with best research evidence and ensuring that services comply with all requirements of quality and patient safety (clinical governance) is a component of this role.

The professional lead for arts therapies will be responsible for establishing effective communication with ABUHB co-terminus and bordering local authorities, education and social services departments and a wide range of voluntary agencies in relation to arts therapies services. The professional lead for arts therapies will be accountable to the Director of Therapies and Health Sciences for the performance of the arts therapies services and provide expert advice on professional practice both within the ABUHB and to external agencies to ensure that arts therapies is appropriately represented in national strategic planning.

Evaluation will be focused on the development of an infrastructure and detailed strategic vision that reflects best practice and aligned with the clinical/research evidence base. This will include the development of a detailed service model, job descriptions, and a coherent vision for future expansion. This model will be shared via NHS networks in the form of a written project evaluation, presentations to key stakeholders and consultation to health boards looking to develop arts therapies services.
