This is a mixed and exciting new role where you will be delivering a range of routine and complex Respiratory and Sleep Physiology diagnostics and therapies at Medway Maritime Hospital and in two Community Diagnostic Centres. You will have specialised knowledge and experience in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology, hold a BSc in Clinical Physiology/Healthcare Science or equivalent and be eligible for AHCS/RCCP registration. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT
) or Registered Sleep Technologist (RST
) statuses are desirable.

Independently undertake and perform a range of basic to complex respiratory investigations, such as Full Lung Function testing (Spirometry, static lung volumes and gas transfer), Bronchodilator reversibility testing, FENO, 6 Minute walk test etc. Including providing a full technical analysis and report of results for medical staff, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of these patients.
Make judgements on the severity of results, ensuring medical staff are informed immediately of any life threatening or urgent investigation results. Ensure that all the correct procedures for dealing with urgent and non-urgent results are adhered to.
To independently perform a range of routine, non-routine, and more complex sleep investigations, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders including Overnight Oximetry, Actigraphy, Limited Polysomnograhy and Overnight Polysomnography Studies with MSLT as necessary. Independent full interpretation and analysis is expected (scoring) at Band 6 level.
To recommend patients on use of CPAP, set-up CPAP therapy and manage follow up consultations in patients with OSA and OHS. This will be in the form of New Patient and Annual Review Clinics
Take responsibility for the cleaning of all clinical equipment and ensuring it is kept in working order, liaise with EME reporting and faults and problems promptly.
To assess investigation requests, checking there are no contraindications or risks, and to assess patients regarding their fitness to perform the tests.
Participate as a member of the resuscitation team if required when an emergency occurs in the department.
Ensure patients are aware of the procedure following any investigations, giving support and reassurance if required.
Evaluate Respiratory equipment and advise medical and other staff on its suitability and use.
Assist with the ongoing design and development of the department information systems.
Responsible for the entry of patient records and reports on to the department database.Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential
- BSc Clinical Physiology or relevant science subject
- ARTP part 1 and part 2 and or A-Step
- Full, detailed knowledge and experience in performing pulmonary function testing (Spirometry, static lung volumes and gas transfer, Bronchodilator reversibility testing, FENO, 6 Minute walk test etc.
- Full, detailed knowledge and experience in performing diagnostic Sleep Tests ( Oximetry/limited polysomnography, actigraphy, full polysomnography) or equivalent
- Ability to interpret, analyse and report sleep studies (scoring)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- At least one year's experience as a Respiratory/Sleep Physiologist post qualification
- At least one year's experience as a Respiratory/Sleep Physiologist in the NHS
