An exciting opportunity for a registered midwife to work with the Maternity team to be our lead Fetal Medicine Midwife and provide the midwifery leadership of the screening team.

They will work together with ourAntenatal and Newborn Screening Programmed Manager to ensure that the Trust meets national screening KPI. They will also work closely with fetal medicine consultants.

They will provide expect knowledge and teaching to the midwifery team on screening and fetal medicine.

They will be the point of contact and support for women and birthing people with abnormal screening results. They will provide counselling and guidance once they have made informed decisions.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing midwifery support in the combined clinic, as part of the MDT including Fetal medicine doctor, neonatal consultant
  • Providing midwifery support at planned appointments with women attending fetal medicine appointments with known felt abnormality.
  • Ensuring that a member of the fetal medicine midwifery team is available for immediate referrals from the fetal medicine scan clinics for women with new diagnosis, provide individual support and advice to the women and their families, and make any referrals to other internal/external agencies that are required to enhance care.
  • Reporting notifiable abnormalities to the appropriate bodies in a prompt time-frame.
  • Coordinating plans of care where women are receiving care from multiple specialties/agencies and ensure all plans for woman/neonate are clearly documented and communicated with the wider maternity team as appropriate

The Maternity unit deliver just under 5000 babies a year. We provide care for a diverse population across West Berkshire. Part of our maternity strategy is equity in access and outcomes tackling the multiple dimensions that affect local healthcare inequalities.

The unit comprises of a delivery suite, midwife led birth centre, postnatal and antenatal wards, outpatients and Day Assessment Unit. We have a very successful home birth service, specialist teams to support vulnerable women and continuity of care teams.

We have developed a 'seeking sanctuary ' service which is a mutidisciplinary approach to providing care to pregnant women seeking sanctuary in the UK and their families. This service was presented as good practice in the NHS three year delivery plan.

We have an established joint led services for rainbow, bereavement, diabetes, fetal medicine, pre term birth.

Main Duties
  • To act as a midwifery specialist in the field of fetal medicine and provide clinical midwifery support in the antenatal and newborn screening programmes. Assist and advise other healthcare professionals in the care of women and children undergoing testing and diagnosis.
  • To actively engage and communicate with families, helping them to understand complex results of investigations and diagnosis using appropriate terminology and providing relevant written information.


Person Specification

EDUCATION

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • EducatedMentorship qualification/ENB997/or equivalent to a minimum of 1st degree level/able to demonstrate evidence that is working at degree level/commenced degree pathway


Desirable

  • Leadership/management qualification


Experience

Essential

  • Significant recent experience in midwifery
  • Must have recent experience at band6/7
  • Experience of leading a change project
  • Experience of working with birthing people and communities to gain feedback
