The Head of Nursing for Infection Prevention and Control is a critical role and the post holder is responsible for leading and implementing the Trust's infection prevention and control programme, providing relevant reports on progress and areas of concern. The Head of Nursing is also responsible for providing expert credible advice on all aspects of infection prevention and control in accordance with policies, procedures and legislation.

Working with the Director of Infection Prevention and Control and the Consultant Microbiologist the post holder will establish the Trust's vision for IPC across the directorates and engaging with other stakeholders across the health economy.

The Head of Nursing for IPC will monitor the impact of the Infection Prevention and Control strategy identifying any risks/ barriers to delivering within agreed timescales.

Hours per week: 37.5

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible and accountable for planning and developing the Infection Prevention and Control strategy for the Trust and accountable for its implementation across the organisation as well as ongoing review and modification. The post holder will report operationally to the Deputy Director of Nursing and will be professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing and Quality / DIPC.
  • The post holder will provide expert operational advice and leadership to colleagues at all levels of the organisation and will role model best practice, setting the operational direction of the IPC service. This includes empowering individuals to take responsibility for Infection Prevention and Control ensuring early identification of risks which may impact on patient quality and safety. Including planning for service continuity and system working in a changing political environment.
  • The post holder will lead, manage and inspire the Infection Prevention and Control team to develop their knowledge and skills and ensure support, supervision and risk management strategies are in place to deliver safe and effective management of the IPC agenda.
  • The post holder is accountable for the interpretation of national and regional guidance to ensure this is embedded into trust cultures, policies and procedures and to ensure that the risk of health care associated infections is reduced. Ensuring partnership working with other health care professionals across the health economy as appropriate.

    • Masters degree or equivalent
    • Suitable management qualification or equivalent
    • Specialist Infection Control Qualification
    • Teaching Qualification
    • Evidence of Continuous professional development

    Essential

    • Persuasive and effective negotiator with highly developed influencing skills

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Thorough and up to date knowledge of relevant national, regional initiatives and a proven track record of implementing this into practice.

    • Significant experience of working in a senior Infection Prevention and Control position
    • Experience of implementing IPC training programmes across all levels of health care professionals
    • Experience of successfully challenging poor practice and unacceptable behaviours
    • Experience of managing people with the ability to articulate the vision of the trust and the IPC agenda
    • Development of educational strategies to support the Infection Prevention and Control agenda
