Haemoglobinopathy adult day unit nurse sought out to join our busy sickle cell and thalassaemia nursing team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a 37.5 hours per week job which entails day care patient management, Blood Transfusion, Automated Exchange Transfusion, Sickle Cell pain management, venesection and medication management.

This post will suit an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated nurse with experience in caring for clients with blood disorder, clinical haematology, Accident and Emergency background and or critical care.

This is the job for someone who fancies a challenge.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the above conditions and must also be willing to learn or expand their expertise in this area.

Support can be given for further development and career progression. We are essentially looking a nurse who has excellent communication skills and enjoys working as part of a small team.

The successful applicant must have experience in working in haematology or accident and emergency or critical care must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience for caring for clients with blood disorders, nursing quality and clinical audit/clinical governance.

Main duties of the job

To understand fully clinical haematological conditions including sickle cell and thalassaemia, and iron deficiency anaemia.

Care for patient's needs, who have such chronic conditions and pursue and learn to achieve greater understanding participate in the management of haemoglobinopathy patients using Automated Exchange Transfusion.

Become proficient in the provision of the Apheresis service.

To administer daily, routine blood transfusions, automated exchange transfusions, iron infusions venesections and other treatments prescribed by the specialist Consultants to regular day attenders.

With the specialist team and the day unit team manage the care of patients attending the haematology Day Unit in painful crisis or are acutely unwell and liaise with acute and emergency services.

To plan and liaise with the Ward Manager and MDT to ensure efficient and responsible use of resources.

To act as an example and mentor for colleagues and students Work with the ward manager and staff members.

To improve and develop the service delivery on the unit Participate in audits and research to improve care and service on the Haematology Day Unit.

The post holder may be required to deputize for the Senior Sister in their absence within the haemoglobinopathies department to support and guide and lead by example.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications


  • oFirst level Registered nurse or midwife (with the NMC)
  • oRelevant educational/ training qualification/certificate/experience
  • oMentorship Course


  • oBSc or Masters level education or working towards it
  • oQualified non-medical prescriber

Skills and abilities


  • oLeadership and initiative skills
  • oExcellent cross disciplinary/interagency communication skills and ability to facilitate collaborative multidisciplinary working relationships
  • oAdvanced organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of development & meet deadlines
  • oDemonstrate an ability to integrate nursing knowledge and skills with the clinical aspects of the job
  • oCompetence in word/database related PC packages (Excel)



  • oExperience at band 6 or above in a related specialty
  • oExperience managing patients with sickle cell disease and Thalassaemia
  • oExperience of acute sickle cell crisis management
  • oPain management
  • oEvidence of management of change, clinical leadership, and development of services
  • oExperience doing audits and clinical research
