Main duties of the job

We are offering a rewarding position for a Dietitian to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and young people in our area with diabetes. Come and join our friendly Childrens Diabetes Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) if you are keen to develop your skills in this field. Nutritional management is one of the cornerstones of diabetes care and education, and dietitians play a vital part. Diabetes management requires intensive daily therapy and children and families need the support of a multidisciplinary team to facilitate healthy growth and development and integrate diabetes care into their everyday life. Diabetes is a vast area of science with constantly emerging new evidence and technologies and so opportunities for ongoing CPD are important.

The dietitians work very closely with our colleagues in the Childrens Diabetes MDT. The team comprises of three Dietitians (including this post), six Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Clinical Psychologist, Healthcare Assistants, Admin and four Consultants.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for a their own caseload. Patients will be seen indiviually, in groups or with carers in a variety of settings including hospital wards, group settings, outpatient clinics, MDT clinics, home visits and telephone clinics. The post holder will work closely with other Dietitians and members of the wider multidisciplinary team.

The department trains dietetic students (A, B and C placement) and the post holder will have an active role in student training planning, co-ordination and assessment

The Childrens Diabetes Dietitians are part of the Nutrition and Dietetic Service. The Nutrition and Dietetic service is structured into teams secondary care (incorporating nutrition support and critical care), bariatrics, primary care (incorporating care home training), adult & paediatric diabetes, adult Home Enteral Feeding, paediatrics (incorporating Home Enteral Feeding and paediatric weight management). the nutrition and dietetic service comprises of 6 teams, with 49 Dietitians, 2 Specialist Nurses, 5 Dietetic assistants and we are supported by central administration. We are based on 4 sites in the County, at Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital.

The post holder will be required to travel between hospital sites within the Trust and the community (County Durham and Darlington).

New graduates are very welcome to apply and take up this position as a training and development role, with responsibilities and role adjusted accordingly. Please note that the appointment will be made at Band 6 Annex 21 (which will be 75% of top of band 6 as per NHS Agenda for Change) or Band 6 dependent on qualifications and experience. If you are appointed under Annex 21 conditions, once you have successfully completed our 12 month competency based training programme you will progress to a permanent Band 6 grade. (The contract ends if an applicant does not successfully complete the required learning objectives within this time frame under the Annex 21 scheme).

• Completion of post-graduate specialist education Ability to plan, initiate and evaluate new services and manage change Has a highly developed understanding of the changing NHS environment and its impact on service provision and staff.

• Experience of using an electronic patient record system Behavioural change training
• knowledge/ experience of continuous Insulin Pump Therapy
