Come and join our excellent stroke team in Worcester. Join us as we continue to develop and improve our service for patients in Worcestershire and possibly in the future also Herefordshire. We are looking for substantive consultants to work in this great team in this excellent location.
Please note that although the Job Description states 1.5 SPA for new consultants moving down to 1 SPA after the first year, this is now incorrect and current trust guidance is for all consultants to receive 2PA SPA to allow full participation in educational, academic, governance and leadership activities.

Main duties of the job
A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
The post-holder will provide support to the A& E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
During their on call, the post holder will provide Stroke support to the A& E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.

Job responsibilities
Acute Stroke services were centralised on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site from June 2013 offering an 8 bed Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), 12beds ASU and also ambulatory High- Risk TIA care being provided at Worcester. All Stroke beds are ringfenced to allow direct admission from A& E. Havingrelocated and reorganized the service, the Division of Medicine is undertaking a program of service development with expansion of Consultant and juniordoctor and specialist nurse posts to support a growing service which aims to provide the highest standards of nursing and specialist medical care.
To this end we are seeking to recruit a well trained and motivated applicant who is able to contribute energy, quality and ideas to this important clinical service as well as aiming to improve our current SSNAP score, which has been improving steadily in recent years and the post holder is anticipated to contribute in continual improvement. The post-holder will participate in thelocal on call rota. Neuro interventional treatments, (Thrombectomy) are offered through University Hospitals Birmingham.
The post holder will be supported by a team consisting of 2 middle grade registrars, 3 SHO level doctors (medical or GP vocational trainees) and 2 FY1 doctors. TheStroke Team includes 8 specialist Stroke Nurses, Neurology & Stroke trained Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Speech & Language therapists, Dietetics, Orthoptists and Social Services. There is also an Audit co-coordinator, Stroke Manager, Lead Practitioner for Stroke and Community based in and out-patient Rehabilitation team. The ward also benefits from daily input from our consultant Neurology team.
Patients needing inpatient rehabilitation from specialist stroke rehabilitation services are treated at Evesham Community Hospital in two wards. At present Early Supportive Discharge has limited capacity but the need to expand is well recognised and the Trust and CCGs are exploring ways for the Community Stroke Team (countywide) to offer this, so that stroke patients continue their rehabilitation at home. The new pathway is looking to centralize community beds to improve access to consultants and other specialists.
Vascular Surgery
There is a vascular unit on site with 4 vascular surgeons who have a close and supportive relationship with Acute Stroke Unit.
Neurosurgical support
Neurosurgery is accessible via the regional neuroscience unit at the Coventry and Warwick University Hospital. Thrombectomy service is provided by the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QE) and there is an established referral pathway. The clinicians at this Trust are actively involved in the development of the regional service and STP plans. The Trust has a Neurophysiology service with easy access to EEG, EMG, NCS & Evoked potentials. Neurology support isprovided by onsite neurologists.
