We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist within the Haematology department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual, to help deliver a high quality, first class service to our users.

Our Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England and is composed of four main hospital sites Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). Positions are available at both QEHB and HGS sites.

The department receives over half a million requests annually, providing a twenty-four hour diagnostic and monitoring service. The laboratory is ISO 15189 and HCPC/IBMS accredited, MHRA approved and facilitates military training. Additionally the laboratory situated at on the QEH site is the nominated Coagulation laboratory for the West Midlands Regional Haemophilia comprehensive care service, and a designated Transfusion Trauma Centre.

The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. Applicants will rotate through Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion and therefore must have an IBMS accredited Degree and relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio. You must have UK laboratory experience as a Biomedical Scientist, with a specialist interest in Haematology, having a sound theoretical and practical knowledge. Further study, scientific posters and papers, and CPD are strongly encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for performing the technical tasks to meet the needs of the laboratory service. This includes analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions and reporting of samples to achieve efficient and effective patient care and resource management. You will be expected to work collaboratively within the laboratory team. You will be committed to providing a high standard of service to our patients and partake in the quality programme of the laboratory. You should have an understanding of legislation, regulation and the maintenance of compliance with ISO 15189:2012.

Currently the laboratory operates a 24/7 shift system and after appropriate training you will be expected to participate in the departmental shift system which attracts AfC enhanced payments.

Applications will be considered from individuals who require the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology & Hospital Transfusion Science. In these circumstances successful applicant salaries will be as per AFC Annex 21 - 70% of the top of band 6 until awarded the diploma, which would be expected to be completed in less than two years. Qualifications

Essential

  • * BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement that is ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
  • * State registration with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).
  • * Post registration specialist competency portfolio or equivalent
  • * Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines


Experience

Essential

  • * Experience of working in clinical laboratories commensurate with the laboratory position.
  • * Experience of laboratory techniques and automation.
  • * Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care.
  • A working knowledge of:
  • * Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Transfusion, Biochemistry,
  • * Microbiology and Cellular Pathology).
  • * Quality control and assurance practices. )
  • * Laboratory health and safety.
  • * HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.


Desirable

  • * Understanding of accreditation within labs (e.g. ISO 15189, MHRA)


Additional Criteria

Essential

  • * Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations with and without the use of aides.
  • * Perform in a team.
  • * Manual dexterity to undertake automated, manual and specialised techniques
  • * Good and accurate IT input and MS Office skills
  • * Effective communication skills both written and oral.
  • * Demonstrate logical thought processes and the ability to solve problems and plan remedial action.
