This is an exciting time to join the team as we are working with our CCGs and Partner organisations to develop a countywide Stroke pathway and we continue the track record of continually improving service quality and working to implement the recent developments in stroke care. We are looking for a Consultant to be actively involved in the provision of and design of our new multi-agency service.

Acute Stroke services were centralized on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site from June2013 offering an 8 bed Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), 12 beds ASU and also ambulatory High-Risk TIA care being provided at Worcester. All Stoke beds are ring-fenced to allow direct admission from A& E.

Having relocated and reorganized the service, the Division of Medicine is undertaking a program of service development with expansion of Consultant and junior doctor and specialist nurse posts to support a growing service which aims to provide the highest standards of nursing and specialist medical care.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking to recruit a well-trained and motivated applicant who is able to contribute energy, quality and ideas to this important clinical service as well as aiming to improve our current SSNAP score, which has been improving steadily in recent years and the post holder is anticipated to contribute in continual improvement. The post-holder may participate in the Network /local rota. Neuro interventional treatments, (Thrombectomy) are offered through University Hospitals Birmingham.

The post holder will be supported by a team consisting of 2 specialist registrars, 3 SHO level doctors (medical or GP vocational trainees) and 2 FY1 doctors. The Stroke Team includes 6 specialist Stroke Nurses, Stroke nurse consultant, Neurology & Stroke trained Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Speech & Language therapists, Dietetics, Orthoptists and Social Services. There is also an Audit co-coordinator, Stroke Manager, Lead Practitioner for Stroke and Community based in and out-patient Rehabilitation team. The ward also benefits from daily input from our consultant neurology team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in Stroke to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.

The post-holder will be expected to provide Acute Stroke Care to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.

The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

The post-holder will attend cross county & cross site meetings.

To collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.

The post-holder will develop close collaborative links with Clinicians working in his/her area of specialist expertise and work to develop services to patients in these areas to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance. To include development of diagnostic and where appropriate therapeutic protocols and guidelines, where appropriate this will involve active participation with Primary Care colleagues.

The post-holder will participate in the Trusts annual appraisal as described by DOH and leading to revalidation and job planning process.

The post-holder will seek approval for any absence from the Trust such as annual leave, professional leave, study leave & other leave and make available this record at your job plan review.

The post-holder will participate in the anticipated 24/7 local based Stroke on call rota to ensure urgent Stroke service is available of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.

The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.

The post-holder, whilst undertaking weekend on call duties, will attend the hospital to undertake patient reviews.

Consultants will provide cross cover for periods of annual and study leave.

To facilitate effective quality assurance and audit and to ensure that services comply with national standards and guidance.

The post-holder will take part in departmental and multi-disciplinary audit programmes in addition to undertaking individual audit. Participation is required in the Departmental Clinical Governance Programme.

The post-holder will participate in regular clinical meetings, post-graduate activities and maintain continuing medical education in accordance with the requirements of the relevant Royal College and General Medical Council. The Post-holder will ensure their own practice is up to date and they support the principles of revalidation by the GMC.

Person Specification

Other Requirements


  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
  • Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when on call



  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to practise
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent eg MRCP
  • Experienced in delivering stroke thrombolysis


  • Higher degree
  • Entry on Specialist Register in Neurology or Acute Medicine & Stroke or General Medicine and Elderly Care Medicine (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)



  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Acute/General Medicine/Neurology
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Expertise in stroke care across acute, inpatient & community rehabilitation


  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Stroke Medicine

Management and Administrative Experience


  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead the stroke firm and multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit


  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate
  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making

Teaching Experience


  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates

Research Experience


  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives


  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
