At GOSH, our data is key in ensuring that we meet national and local information reporting requirements to external commissioning bodies and registries and well as supporting clinical service delivery, information development, performance management and planning throughout the hospital.

We are looking for a Data Analyst who will take the lead in supporting the data management needs within a Clinical Division.

You will be an integral member of the Information Services Business Intelligence team and will lead on reporting Genetics data, working closely with the North Thames Genomics Laboratory Hub.

You will be responsible for managing Genetics data within the Trust's Data Warehousing environments and delivering reporting on that data to Trust standards, adding value to the Division by providing expert analysis and insight, working alongside clinical and operational staff to drive improvement.

Main duties of the job

The responsibilities of the role include:
  • Understanding the reporting requirements of the Division and translating these into an end product
  • Specification and design of report and data requirements
  • Development of reporting to support operational and clinical need
  • Troubleshooting and investigation of issues
  • Data Warehousing development, including the specification and provision of datasets
  • Providing support and knowledge sharing with both technical and non-technical colleagues across the Trust

Previous NHS experience would be an advantage but is not essential.

As detailed in the person specification this role would suit someone who:
  • Has BI Tools experience
  • Has an analytical and logical mind-set and enjoys problem-solving
  • Has an ability to think creatively
  • Is adaptable and confident working alone as well collaboratively as part of a team

  • Degree level or equivalent experience in a numerate or information systems discipline
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


  • Clinical Training in a Genetics capacity



  • Demonstrable success in working for a complex organisation including considerable experience in data management
  • Experience in Information Management
  • Understanding of clinical pathways
  • Experience of working with nationally defined performance metrics and interpreting these in local datasets
  • Experience of MS Excel, Access and data manipulation
  • Production of information/reports to assure data integrity
  • Adding value to information to support the wider organisational need
  • A good understanding of NHS IT infrastructure and systems
  • Experience of identification and implementation of improvement strategies


  • Knowledge of computerised Patient Information Systems (e.g. EPIC, OMNI Lab)

  • Ability to analyse, investigate and resolve complex queries, issues and problems
  • Demonstrative drive, commitment and self-motivation

  • Strong SQL and SQL Server (or equivalent) skills (to replace Programming in one or more scripting languages for web and/or application development (e.g. SQL and Transact SQL, VBA))
  • Ability to work with non-technical users to create specifications for data interfaces with Trust Information Systems
  • Excellent Attention to Detail


  • Familiarity with an industry standard Business Intelligence reporting tool (QlikSense preferred)
  • Good ability to develop new ways of working
