Band 6 - Microbiology Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Full Time 37.5hrs per week Part Time applicants considered

The job holder will be required to work unsociable hours including night, weekend and Bank Holiday shifts.

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to appoint Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientists who have completed their specialist portfolio, or have equivalent experience, to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Microbiology Department at Watford General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The Microbiology department is UKAS accredited and is accredited for training by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

We serve a population of approximately half a million and the laboratory processes over 420,000 tests per year providing a comprehensive diagnostic service including Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology and Molecular testing.

The expanded Molecular testing laboratory is currently running, GeneXpert Cepheid, GenMark ePlex, and BioFire FilmArray technology.

The Department uses the Clinisys Winpath LIMS system and Gael Q-Pulse Quality Management System.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidates will join our busy, professional and friendly team at an exciting time following substantial investment in laboratory technology including SediMAX for Urine Microscopy, MALDI-TOF for organism identification and the BD Phoenix system for identification and susceptibility testing, BD Bactec FX for Blood cultures, BD MGIT 960 for TB culture and LIAISON XL and VIDAS for Serology.

We are looking for strong team players in both Bacteriology & Serology with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients. The job holder will be required to work 1:4 Saturdays and participate in Sunday and Bank Holiday working arrangements as well as participating in the On Call rota after training
