The Surgical Upper Gastro Intestinal Team is looking for an enthusiastic, driven and keen team member to join the Clinical Nurse Specialist Team (CNS). The successful applicant will work and be supported through training to become a proficient and competent Band 6 CNS. They will be expected to work both autonomously, as well as within the team. Although employed through LUHFT they will predominantly be based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital Site. Case load will focus on surgical oncology patients however there will be an additional benign element.

Main duties of the job

  • standards of professional practice, ensuring quality care delivery and safety to the patient group. High
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the Upper GI patient disease process and concurrent treatment pathways.
  • Develop a knowledge of oncology treatments offered through the patient pathway.
  • Attend, support and contribute the Ward Round on a rotational basis.
  • Contribute towards education to the Medical, Nursing, Healthcare and Student Nurse/Trainee Nurse Associate group.
  • Attend, participate and communicate in patient specific MDTs, and supra-regional MDT meetings.
  • Act as a role model to junior staff.
  • Support, contribute and communicate to the team, ensuing that clinical care is delivered to a high standard.
  • Maintain and manage a patient case load (supported by the senior team)
  • Manage the care needs of the outpatient group, offering ongoing support and education to the patient and relatives.
  • Show exceptional clinical decision making skills.
  • Ability to interpret procedure/test results
  • Attend OPD clinics, supporting the patient group, medical and CNS team.
  • Develop local and regional networks with MDT teams and specialities.
  • Provide clinical advice around Upper GI illness and symptom management to inpatient and outpatient group.
  • Proficient in completing appropriate treatment referrals to internal and external specialities.
  • Offer support to the ward environment when caring and communicating with Upper GI patients and their relatives.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Post registration qualification in specialty


Desirable

  • 1 st level degree or studying towards
  • ALS


Experience

Essential

  • Experience at senior staff nurse level
  • Evidence of team leadership
  • Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
  • Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
  • Application of evidence based practice
  • Evidence of developing high standards of patient care through clinical benchmarking


Desirable

  • Evidence of working with pre and post registration students

Essential

  • High level of personal and professional credibility
  • Basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing
