Here is an exciting opportunity for newly qualified (or soon to be newly qualified) speech & language therapist.

We want a motivated and enthusiastic NQT, or a person who is returning to the profession after a break, to work as an integrated member of our acute speech & language therapy team in assessing, and managing patients with acquired disorders of communication and /or swallowing , rotating between both acute ward settings and our Acute Stroke Unit.

In return, we will offer you the support and development opportunities to enhance the theoretical knowledge you have gained in university and to develop the clinical skills you will need for this caseload - thus enabling you to complete your NQT competencies. We would also expect you to complete your basic level (C) dysphagia competencies over the period of 6-12 months through supervision, observation, supported learning and training where relevant.

Main duties of the job

You will be a fully integrated member of the Adult Acute Speech & Language Therapy service

You will work with us to provide SALT assessment, therapy and management to a range of patients who have acquired disorders of communication /swallowing, within the scope of your skills and abilities. You will be working in rotation between acute wards and our Acute Stroke Unit, with your other band 5 colleagues.

You will provide intervention following EBP, and to ensure all patients are treated to the best of your ability, seeking help and support from the wider team as needed

You will access regular supervision and support, which will enable both your professional and clinical development to progress effectively

You will be proactive in a external training opportunities, where relevant, which will help you to become an excellent therapist

You will need to have a flexible and friendly approach to both your patients and your team, and the wider professional group you will be working with

Job responsibilities

We have a number of clinical specialists within the team which are available for junior staff to observe and learn from, or even just to ask simple clinical questions to , to enable you to create better care plans for more effective patient management.

We have a weekly Videofluoroscopy clinic, which all staff rotate into regularly. Following acquisition of our own FEES stack, more senior therapists are currently developing skills in endoscopy and FEES to enhance our own FEES service. We are also working with ENT in starting a joint ENT/SALT clinic for the assessment and management of patients referred with dysphonia.

We are recognized as a good trainer for students and new qualified staff, and are commended that our staff receive a supportive and active learning experience when working with us.

The Adult Acute SALT team are well respected and established within our hospital. We are core members of many MDTs, especially within Stroke, Head & Neck cancer, degenerative neurological conditions and Critical care, and where we are not ward based, strive to ensure that we always act as an advocate for best patient care/management.

In addition to formal/external training opportunities, the service has regular journal club and 'lunch and learn' sessions in order to keep us up-to-date with our CPD, and also as a good opportunity to share food and get to know each other better. Good baking skills can be an advantage if you join us!

Clinical experience

  • Placement with an adult population with acquired disorders of communication/swallowing


Desirable

  • Experience at placement/post-qualification of acute adult hospital SALT service
  • Experience at placement/post qualification of stroke caseload
  • Experience with stroke or degenerative neuro conditions at social or clinical level
  • Experience with adults with acquired communication disorders
  • Experience with adults with developmental communication disorders


Administrative skills

Essential

  • Experience using microsoft computer packages regularly


Desirable

  • use of computer to create therapeutic materials
  • experience using computers for clinical admin at placement/post-qualification
  • experience using computers for AAC on placement/post qualification


Placement/work experience

Essential

  • working in an MDT or multiple professional environment, either in placement or in work


Desirable
