Working with both the Neonatal and Midwifery Leadership Teams, as well as linking with the MNR (Maternity and Neonatal Programme) Leads, the Neonatal and Maternity Directorate General Manager will provide operational and strategic leadership for the development of the Neonatal and Maternity Services across NUH. The Directorate General Manager will ensure that all operational performance targets including waiting lists, finance, workforce and service improvement targets are achieved. They will work with the Divisional Leadership Team and other Divisional and Specialty/Service Teams to ensure optimal performance, service integration and contribute to the development of services in their Division, the Trust, and where appropriate the wider Nottinghamshire health and social care system.

To will provide inspirational leadership, encourage engagement of all staff, and be enthusiastic and motivated to ensure provision of safe and effective patient care.

Within the Neonatal and Maternity Services leadership teams, foster a culture that promotes openness and enables people to have the confidence to speak up and ensure that there are clear and effective communication mechanisms in the directorate.

Foster a climate of innovation and improvement for all Neonatal adn Maternity Services including fostering and developing close links with the Children's Hospital service.

Deputise for the Divisional General Manager and Divisional Leadership Team when necessary.

Training & Qualifications


  • Educated to first degree level or equivalent experience
  • Further training to masters level or equivalent
  • Previous successful management experience at a senior level within the NHS
  • Experience of managing a Neonatal or Maternity service



  • Highly developed leadership and organisational skills
  • Clear understanding of NHS agenda
  • Proven track record of senior operational management in a multi-disciplinary environment

Communciation & Relationship skills


  • Demonstrates ability to communicate highly complex, sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Highly developed leader with strong interpersonal and communication skills

Analytical and Judgement Skills


  • Demonstrates ability to analyse complex facts or situations in relation to performance targets, strategy and finance
  • Proven track record of managing operating budgets and delivering financial balance
  • Experience of implementing and evaluating a range or projects/initiatives that represent solutions to changing workforce/service environments

Planning and Organisational skills


  • Experience of formulating long-term strategic plans and impact on the organisation, translating business strategy into operational delivery
  • proven track record of developing successful business plans and strategy for planning activity
  • Experience of managing complex organisational change incluisng working with clinical and non clinical staff to change team structures and ways of working
  • Confident in presenting complex information to wide and varied audience both internal and external to the organisation

Physical skills


  • Intense concentration to focus on analysis of performance data
