The post holder will be responsible for maintaining high standards of care within the Vascular service for both inpatients and outpatients, working under the direction of the Lead Vascular Nurse Specialist and deputising in their absence. The post holder will be expected to be a dynamic, focused and extremely organised individual with excellent decision-making skills. The post holder will be independent in their practices and be expected to lead Vascular nurse led clinics independently, providing Vascular expertise autonomously, in addition to working alongside Vascular Consultants in the Vascular one-stop clinics, both at Royal Blackburn Hospital and ELHT peripheral sites. Will be actively involved in pre and post operative care of patients with vascular disease and support the wider vascular team with both inpatient and outpatients and support/plan vascular training sessions for both primary and secondary care.

The post holder will be an excellent communicator whilst providing clinical, professional, and educational leadership within ELHT and provide specialist vascular nursing advice, support and education to patients and carers and health care professionals across East Lancashire Teaching hospitals.

Confidently coordinate the Vascular Lab, working closely with vascular administrative assistant to ensure patient flow through the department.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high standards of vascular care within Vascular services across the trust

They must be able to demonstrate strong leadership qualities and have a passion for improving the patient experience in addition to having a sound Vascular clinical knowledge base.

They will possess well developed communication skills that will be used to engage, inspire and motivate both staff and patients in the clinical area. Good time management skills are essential, as is the ability to priorities your workload

This is a role which will enable you to enhance your existing managerial and leadership skills and you will receive support from the Vascular Nurse Specialist team, Vascular Consultants and Vascular Directorate.

As a Vascular Nurse Specialist, you will demonstrate the ability to work well as a member of a team, showing support and kindness to others and seamlessly, plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of care for patients with vascular disease.

Job responsibilities

  • Undertake vascular assessment of both in/outpatients across all ELHT sites.
  • Organise further vascular investigations/bloods/x-rays/Ultrasound arterial/venous scans and interpret results and implement and evaluate programmes of care for patients with vascular disease in conjunction with the Vascular Consultants, Nurses, Registrar team and other multi-disciplinary team members as necessary.
  • Develop and update Trust standard operating procedures (SOPS), patient information leaflets in relation to vascular disease/investigations/procedures and be actively involved in the planning and delivery of all Vascular training programs.
  • Attend and support the Vascular One stop Consultant clinic at all ELHT sites, working independently, making clinical decisions under the direction of the Vascular Consultant.
  • Confidently lead the Vascular Nurse Led clinics at all ELHT sites, working autonomously and independently, making clinical decisions relating to the care of patients with vascular disease.
  • Ensure that the nursing care of patients with vascular disease is based on valid evidence and conducted in accordance with relevant guidelines and/or protocols.
  • Support the development of clinical pathways, policies, and procedures for vascular care in collaboration with the Vascular Consultant and nursing teams.
  • Ensure safe and appropriate use of clinical equipment.
  • Work across all IT systems, including CERNER/ICE/CLINICAL PORTAL and make clear documentation in patient records according to ELHT policies, always following Information Governance procedures.
  • Always follow policy/procedures regarding maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Continue to develop the role of the Vascular nurse specialist in accordance with the changing needs of patients and vascular service.
  • Support the development of nurse led outpatient clinics to meet the needs of the patients with vascular problems as required by the vascular service in line with the Trust business objective and strategy for nursing.
  • Act as a resource and provide advice on the care and management of patients to healthcare professionals and other agencies.
  • Demonstrate a contribution to local implementation of Clinical Governance.
  • Ensure a consistent approach to the prevention and control of infection.
  • Be caring and supportive to other members of the team and be actively involved in the appraisal process of other team members.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the service, working closely with the lead vascular nurse specialist to identify and assess health needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Lower limb Vascular service (LLVS) to provide a seamless approach the flow of vascular patients into the service, and be actively involved in the coordination of the Vascular Nurse Multi-disciplinary team meeting.
  • Identify educational needs of staff with regard to the care of vascular patients.
  • Attend all mandatory training relevant to role in accordance with trust policy.
  • Disseminate and implement good practice based on information obtained from the National Institute of Clinical Effectiveness (NICE) and other resources.
  • Attend meetings as required to facilitate effective communication.
  • Mange and prioritise own workload.
  • To actively promote the Vascular Nursing service via presentations, study days etc.
  • Mange online diary system in collaboration with the Vascular administrative assistant when making patient appointments.
  • Manage patient information and documentation on CERNER and manage appointments on CERNER appropriately in the absence of Vascular admin

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Registered NMC Professional
    • Educated to Diploma level
    • Recognised teaching qualification


    Desirable

    • Leg ulcer management module
    • vascular nursing module/course


    Experience

    Essential

    • Substantial post registration experience in vascular nursing/setting at Band 5 or 6
    • Evidence of leg ulcer management experience


    Desirable

    • extensive leg ulcer management experience


    Knowledge & Skills

    Essential

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Vascular disease
    • Clear understanding of current Vascular Network strategy
    • Evidence of ability to carry out Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI)
