We are looking for an individual who is driven to lead the team to provide excellent care. This will involve supporting and promoting change as the implementation of care models to support the ethos of Better Births and Okenden recommendation.

Being responsible for the effective management of the delivery suite/Triage over the 24-hour period, you will need to demonstrate clinical expertise and compassionate leadership to the midwifery team as well as work alongside members of the multi-disciplinary team. Supported by our intrapartum Matron, you will ensure that midwifery and corporate standards are maintained, measured and monitored. Being responsive to a dynamic environment is a key skill, supporting all staff to meet the needs of the service. The post holder will be responsible for the deployment and supervision of staff when required to meet the needs of the maternity service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated midwife with excellent leadership and communication skills who can demonstrate focus and commitment to creating positive birth experiences for women and a nurturing and supportive environment for staff.

As an expert midwifery practitioner, you will have the necessary skills, confidence, courtesy and diplomacy to support our staff to practice safely and be committed to ensuring that women, babies and their families receive the care and support required to promote optimum outcomes.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team, allied groups within the acute Trust and Primary Care Trust, public and voluntary sectors.
  • Represent and promote the Maternity Department, Division and Trust internally and externally as required.
  • Provide and disseminate professional and clinical knowledge to multi-disciplinary team.
  • To communicate highly sensitive and complex information to women and their families clearly explaining the benefits and risks of different care approaches and the alternatives available recognising barriers to acceptance.
  • To ensure that essential information on clients condition and decisions taken regarding care are recorded and communicated appropriately according to Trust policy and Nursing and Midwifery Council Guidelines.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and diplomacy in dealing with professional colleagues and members of the public
  • Offering support to staff when caring for bereaved families working alongside the bereavement lead midwife
  • Support staff with CTG interpretation and decision making with all intrapartum care

Sandwell and west Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest hospital trusts in west midlands delivering services from our midwifery led unit and delivery Suite at city hospital, which encompass a twelve birthing rooms, including two bereavement suites. We offer multi positional birthing beds, and a birthing pool room. Our CTG machines utilise wireless telemetry to encourage mobility. Within our Delivery Suite is our Triage Department.

We work closely with the Neonatal unit, and have jointly implemented a daily Safety huddle with in the LMNS. We work in partnership with families to provide individualised plans.
