Job description is awaiting Royal College approval
This post is a new post for the proposed female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU - six bedded female ward) based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. PICU will receive referrals for patients from various sources including adult acute wards, police, prisons and rarely from the community teams. Following PICU treatment, patients will either be returned to the General Adult services which referred them, or transferred to more specialist services if necessary. Female PICU will be commissioned by the various Integrated Care Boards (ICBs previously known as CCGs) from the boroughs covered by PCNFT.
Main duties of the job
Take clinical responsibility for the in-patients, and lead the multi-disciplinary team. Assume the role of RC, which carries with it the responsibility to ensure that all the necessary documentation (including Section 17 leave, Consent/Treatment, section renewal etc. forms) is correct and up-to-date, that adequate reports are provided for Manager's Appeals or Tribunals within the time period laid down in the Code of Practice, and that either s/he attends or ensures adequate representation is available. The appointee will maintain approval as an Approved Clinician and under Section 12 of The MHA 1983 (amended 2007).
Regularly assess the clinical state of the inpatients, and be involved in psychological and/or family-based therapies, depending on the appointee's training and interests. Attend regular detailed Care Programme Approach meetings to review progress to date and set longer term goals, in consultation with family/carers and Care Coordinators. Attend weekly Clinical Team Meetings, and contribute to the multi-disciplinary review of the patients. The consultant will normally chair this meeting. The aim is to review progress and to set short-term goals in keeping with the longer term goals set by the CPA review.
About us
Participate in the on-call rota in Stockport. This currently has 1:11 frequency. This is expected to change from the beginning of 2024. Trust is merging the on-call for Stockport and Tameside so the frequency of Consultant on-calls is expected to reduce to 1:25. It is also expected that all the on-calls will be covered by a middle grade (SAS or ST doctor). This would mean that Consultant will be the third on-call professional. On-calls will be for General Adult working age patients. During on-call the appointee may be called upon to advise junior doctors, or assess patients in the community, A& E departments, police stations etc. at the request of GPs, police surgeons, junior doctors, or other consultants in other specialties, and provide the services of a Section 12 Approved Doctor and Approved Clinician. The appointee will liaise with the appropriate consultant team who will have any ongoing responsibility for the patient.
Job description
Job responsibilities
To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trusts personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Health Education England framework.
To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly to the Information Department.
To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Approved Clinician Status, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.
To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
