The Royal Cornwall hospital is the sole provider of pathology services for Cornwall & is currently looking for a motivated, full time (37.5 hours) band 5 Biomedical Scientist to become part of our team in the busy, professional & friendly Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion Department. They will rotate through all sections, covering the full range of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. In the absence of suitably experienced and/or registered staff, we are willing to consider employment to Annexe-21 of band 5, with progression to band 5 after attainment of specific, timely goals. This will be subject to a training contract.
Our laboratory has full ISO 15189 Accreditation status and the Transfusion laboratory is fully MHRA compliant. The laboratory is equipped with Abbott Alinity full blood count analysers, Werfen Coagulation TOP analysers, Grifols Erytra blood grouping analysers and access to Sebia capillary electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy and antenatal sickle cell and thalassaemia screening. The hospital is a Haemostasis Centre with the laboratory undertaking advanced coagulation thrombotic and haemorrhagic investigations.
You will be expected to participate in the current rota system covering an extended working day (8am-8pm) which allows for some flexibility in working patterns. Following suitable training a place on the out of hours rota (8pm-8am and Bank Holidays) will be allocated which currently attracts a sessional payment and good paid recovery time.
Main duties of the job
To undertake scientific duties in any part of the Department as required in order to facilitate the smooth running of the service.
To provide a clinical technical service by performing routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples.
To maintain and run specialist equipment as deemed appropriate by the lead BMS.
To provide cover for other staff members and engage in the team ethic.
To supervise, mentor and support Trainee Biomedical Scientists and support staff.
To support the quality management system.
