We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Midwifery Matron to lead the Midwifery Led Services at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. We are proud to be able to offer 4 places of birth, choice and personalisation and 3 established continuity of care teams.

With transformational leadership skills and extensive midwifery experience, the post holder will be accountable for the provision of high-quality care in their area/s of responsibility. The post holder will provide professional, clinical, and managerial leadership across the maternity service, with a specific focus on midwifery led services. Specifically, the postholder will provide professional leadership, advice and support, acting as a clinical expert with oversight of the alongside and free-standing birth centres and community services.

The Matron for Midwifery Led Care will be an integral member of the management team who will be is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the service, implementing the Trust's Nursing & Midwifery strategy alongside national, regional, and local drivers for improvement.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will support the delivery of strong visible clinical leadership, promoting professional advice and guidance to all maternity staff, to ensure the highest standards of woman centered care are delivered in our service.

The Matron's role is fundamental to supporting the Divisional Midwifery and Nursing Director in transforming the maternity services and leading quality improvement and assurance processes which underpin the provision of safe, effective, maternity care.

You will be a credible leader, have current operational clinical management experience and be able to initiate and implement change and innovation in practice. Can you demonstrate and show a supportive and flexible leadership approach to influence and sustain high care standards, safety and quality.

Job responsibilities

The Maternity Matron for Midwife Led Care is responsible for:

Ensuring that the midwifery teams within the area of responsibility are appropriately resourced and organised for the maximum benefit of women and their families.

Ensuring staff and services are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trusts Values, Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework, The 6 Cs, Safety and Quality Strategy, Governance framework, CQC standards, NICE guidance, other strategic local and national plans and policies.

Leading and developing staff by being a visible authoritative role model providing clinical and managerial leadership, support and direction, capitalising on research and development opportunities, supporting staff to reach their full potential.

Ensure clinical services are developed in partnership with service users and delivered in line with national policy, Trust priorities and available evidence.

Contributing to the delivery of the trust and directorate safety quality and clinical governance priorities and associated work programmes.

Ensuring the productive operation of their areas through the monitoring and maintenance of the highest standards of clinical care that create safe, clean and organised services ( including implementation of the infection control policy and action plans) and by developing processes designed to increase the time midwifery staff spend with women and their families.

Proactively managing the local resolution of incidents and concerns, where necessary formally investigating incidents, PALS, complaints, errors or omissions.

Acting up in professional or managerial capacity as required and appropriate.

Participating in the management rota providing leadership, advice and support in line with the site managers duties and responsibilities as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • oAppropriate Professional Registration
  • oDegree in Midwifery or health related subject
  • oTeaching and assessing qualification.
  • oRegistered with Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • oRecognised management / leadership qualification (or working towards


Desirable

  • oMasters
  • oPost graduate degree at Master level or willingness to work towards
  • oLeadership qualification


Knowledge

Essential

  • oSignificant operational experience of working as a Band 7 or Band 8a within the last 3 years
  • oExperience of service development, leading and managing change
  • oEvidence of effective budgetary control
  • oUp-to-date knowledge of national midwifery policy and strategy
  • oExperience of working across organisational boundaries
  • oExperience of policy development and implementation
  • oExperience of managing and completing 'performance management' processes
