We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical Psychologist (8a) to join us in Atkinson Secure Childrens Home. We are a multi-disciplinary team focused on improving the lives of young people with complex trauma histories.

We are looking for someone with the skills, experience and the passion to work with young people with complex social, emotional, behavioural, neurodevelopmental and mental health needs and who can present with behaviours that challenge.

We use a model of trauma recovery and therapeutic parenting. The Senior Clinical Psychologist has a key role in supporting this across the home, embedding the approach as a core member of the multi-disciplinary team, working closely with education and care colleagues as well as multi-agency partners.

The postholder will use their skills and experience to undertake complex psychological assessments, formulation and provide high quality care. They will provide consultation and supervision to support colleagues across the home in delivering trauma informed care and to promote emotional wellbeing. Using evidence-based practice and routine outcome measures, you will use a strength-based approach to work collaboratively with young people.

We are part of Children and Family Health Devon and are linked to a strong and friendly network of Psychologists working across Devon, enjoying shared CPD and professional support. We also have excellent links with local Doctoral courses for teaching and Trainee placements.

Main duties of the job

You will be a qualified & experienced Clinical Psychologist ready to move into a more senior role. You will have the knowledge & skills to deliver evidence-based, outcome monitored psychological therapies & will also be able to demonstrate your competence as a reflective practitioner with a passion for working successfully in multi-disciplinary & multi-agency teams. You will have developed skills in supervising other clinicians.

The ability to adapt your communication & intervention style to meet individual need is important & you will have knowledge of child development & safeguarding procedures. Managing risk & being able to assess mental health presentations, including complex trauma, is a core part of this role, responding to both urgent & routine, planned & unplanned need.

Above all you will be able to demonstrate a commitment to service user participation & to collaborative working with children, young people & families. You will be developing yourself a clinical leader & will bring a positive approach to quality improvement & service development with skills in audit & service evaluation. You would have regular clinical supervision & be supported in developing your breadth of skills alongside time for research & CPD/training opportunities.

Qualifications

Essential

• A Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent e.g. Masters level qualification in Clinical Psychology if qualified before 1996.
• Active registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC.
• Post qualification specialist therapy/assessment training relevant to children and young people.
• Post qualification training or proven equivalent experience in supervision

Experience

Essential

• Experience of undertaking specialist psychological assessments and therapeutic interventions for CYP with a wide variety of mental health problems and/or neurodiversity and/or learning disability, reflecting all levels of clinical severity including risk assessments of self-harming/dangerous/challenging behaviour.
• Experience of teaching and/or training
• Experience of delivering clinical supervision
• Experience, and/or training in diversity awareness and social inequality

Desirable

• Experience of work in psychological interventions with children, young people and their families in a range of service settings or agencies Experience in undertaking leadership roles within clinical psychology services in the NHS, and in contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies and clinical policies in multi-disciplinary, multi-agency contexts

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Essential

• Specialist knowledge of child development and the impact of adverse childhood experiences.
• Broad knowledge of psychological services and of the services in the NHS where psychology is applied to the needs of children and young people Knowledge of psychometric assessment tools and their appropriate use Detailed understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity, Section 25 of the Childrens Act)
• Advanced psychological assessment and formulation skills including risk assessment.
• Ability to travel across the geographical service area as required
