The post is based at The St.Aubyn Centre (General Adolescent Unit- GAU aged 13-18) in Colchester Essex. The hospital offers short term admission to young people who are no longer safe in the community due to their complex mental health needs and high risk presentations. Colchester is a trauma, DBT and systemic informed service that works with young people and parents or carers in collaborative ways to effect change. The service offers a comprehensive range of therapeutic groups to young people and their carers, a variety of individual assessments/interventions and family therapy assessments and treatments. The psychological therapy team are extremely experienced clinicians and innovators in service improvement, recently winning a national ward for their DBT skills groups and Positive Behaviour Support Plans.

The post offers a wide range of training opportunities. It is essential that the staff team have the diversity of skills and knowledge required to work effectively with young people. EPUT Trust is committed to being a trauma informed organisation.

The post is suitable for an experienced psychologist who will be appointed to an 8a position.

It is also suitable for a newly qualified psychologist who will take on roles/responsibilities based on ability and experience and be appointed to aband 7 position. A preceptorship plan will be put in place to support the post holder working toward band 8a.

Main duties of the job

Main duties

To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for own professional practice, working within professional ethics and Trust policies.

To be responsible for providing both generic and specialist psychology assessments and devise highly specialised programmes of care and services to improve outcome for young people and their families.

To work autonomously and in joint work with other clinicians. This will involve collaborating with clinicians in the multi-disciplinary team and with external professional networks.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of Young People's mental health problems and to practice within the context of evidence based approaches and the overall therapeutic approach/philosophy of the service.

To undertake APT lead role for a small a number of patients, coordinating care and providing psychological oversight.

To lead therapy groups and promote understanding of group dynamics using a psychological perspective.

To have a good knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the CPA approach.

Please be advised that this advert showcases the salary scale of the bottom of Band 7 to the top of Band 8a, this is due to the possibility of Preceptorship at Band 7. The Band 7 salary scale is �43,742 to �50,056 per annum pro rata and the Band 8a salary scale is �50,952 to �57,349 per annum pro rata.

Alongside the clinical roles outlined in the advert the post also has a range of supervisory, consultation, teaching/ training, auditing/research and staff support roles dependent on interest and experience.

Such as:To be responsible for providing expert specialist psychological consultation, support and advice to professionals both within and external to the unit. This will include liaison and working with professional networks involved with complex issues such as child protection, self-harm, violence and trauma.Provide mental health advice and support for staff as required.To organise and provide psychology teaching and training in the Unit in line with service and training needs.To provide supervision to the multi-disciplinary team in their work with young people and their families.Responsible for providing professional and clinical supervision and training placements to psychology trainees. To write placement reports for trainees in line with training organisation, HCPC and BPS codes of ethics and good practice.To initiate and contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the service.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the appropriate professional accreditation body.
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
  • HCPC (and/or UKCP) registered, and eligible for registration with a professional clinical body (BPS).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the HPCP and UKCP/BPS by completion of CPD log demonstrating a minimum of 40 hours per year.


Knowledge

Essential

  • Doctoral or equivalent level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Knowledge of legislation, and its implications in relation to the client group and mental health.
  • Well-developed knowledge of theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies.


Desirable

  • Formal training in supervision of psychological therapists (band 8a only)
  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc.).
