This post is for a full-time consultant psychiatrist working into a well-established community mental health team covering the Sedgefield & Dales sector. The service serves an over-65 population of 257,007. The service provides assessment and treatment of organic and functional mental illness.

From a management perspective, the service is divided geographically across the locality to cover Durham (comprising 4 community mental health teams: Durham & Chester-le-Street, Derwentside, Sedgefield & Dales, and Easington) and Tees Valley (comprising 5 community mental health teams: Darlington & Teesdale, Stockton, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, and Redcar & Cleveland).

The community teams provide mental health assessments for people who have memory problems or who have other mental health problems requiring secondary care intervention in the locality. The service has memory clinics that assesses and diagnoses people with dementia. The teams follow the Dementia Care Pathway (DCP), described in more detail below.

For the functional side of the teams, the service promotes the recovery model. The teams follow the Functional Pathway which uses the 5P formulation model, based around recovery and co-production of care plans.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical PAs are 7.5 PA across the week at Auckland Park Hospital in Bishop Auckland. This post provides consultant leadership to the Sedgefield & Dales community team, working closely with other consultant and specialty doctor colleagues for this team.

The post-holder will be responsible for the delivery of mental health services to the population of older people of approximately 33,000. The Consultant is an integral member of enthusiastic and well managed multi-disciplinary teams operating in community and inpatient settings. There is a need for a flexible approach to a pattern of working which may change from time to time depending on the demands of the various areas of the service. There will be a requirement to undertake some home visits. It is expected that the post holder will carry a small personal caseload of around 20 patients.

The post-holder is expected to be the Responsible Clinician for any patients on CTOs within the patch, though this number has remained historically low. The post-holder is expected to prioritise Mental Health Act Assessments for their own patients during working hours, and be a qualified DOLS Mental Health Assessor for any patients on their personal caseload.
