An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent, 32 hours per week Hydrocephalus Nurse Specialist to join the Neurosurgery service at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. The successful candidate will be employed within the Adult Hydrocephalus service, working closely alongside a wider clinical team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Neurosurgery Registrars, Consultants, Physiotherapists, Neuropsychologists and administerial support.

The candidate will work both within neurosurgical outpatient clinics and on neurosurgical inpatient wards. They will help to coordinate the pathway of adults with hydrocephalus throughout their elective neurosurgical journey, from pre-operative assessment, inpatient care and supporting post operative management.

The candidate should have excellent communication and team working skills and will be flexible to meet the demands of the changing service. They will act as a source of specialist advice, support and education for patients and professionals both within the Trust and further afield.
The service runs between 07:30 and 18:00 Monday to Friday and working hours will be considered flexibly within this time frame.

Job responsibilities
- To work with the team executing both elective inpatient and outpatient pathways
- To provide a comprehensive holistic assessment for all hydrocephalus patients working towards telephone pre-operative anaesthetic assessment
- Liaise with the MDT on issues arising from physical and social assessment of elective hydrocephalus patients.
- To undertake relevant nursing procedures, collating results and investigations for the anaesthetic pre-operative preparation for patients on the hydrocephalus pathway.
- To participate in information and database management for new patients entering the service.
- To understand the elective hydrocephalus pathway, building on the existing structure as well as finding new ways of working where applicable.
- The post holder will take personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring that Trust and local policies and procedures are known and followed and will ensure duties are carried out in accordance with the advisory guidelines and practice set out in the professional code of conduct.
- Demonstrable experience of working in the department of neurosurgery or equivalent MSK
- Experience in audit, research and understanding quality issues
- Experience of working in a stressful environment and with emotional or aggressive patients and carers and the acutely ill
- Experience of understanding clinical governance and its implications for services
- Experience of presenting information, written and oral in a clear and logical manner
- Experience of working under indirect supervision and acting appropriately on constructive comment

- Diploma/degree in nursing
- Current Live Registration with Professional Council (NMC)
- Evidence of regular CPD
- A wide range of undergraduate and graduate Nursing experience - including approximately 2 years Neurosurgery/ MSK experience and experience working in the NHS
- Experience of working as part of an extended MDT
- Experience of Mentoring
- To participate in service development including participation in audit
- To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice
