A vacancy has arisen within the Histopathology department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary for a six months fixed term full time Registered or Trainee Biomedical Scientist. The post is to support improving performance to the 28 day Faster Diagnostic Standard by widening the working day within the Histopathology laboratory.

The post holder should be HCPC registered (unless applying as a trainee) with some experience in histopathology techniques, although training will be given for the successful candidate. A trainee would be considered if there is a lack of suitably qualified applicants.

Annex 21 will be applied if appointed as a trainee.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be joining a team in a busy but friendly UKAS/ ISO15189 accredited department. The laboratory processes approximately 28,000 specimens per year and performs 12,000 IHC stains per year. The department is currently supporting training for BMS tissue dissection and reporting. This role will involve rotation around all Histopathology sections including microtomy, embedding, special stains, small tissue transfer, immunohistochemistry, non-gynae cytology and andrology.

Hours of Duty:

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

7.5 hours per day worked between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
