As a pivotal part of our team you will be responsible for the daily management and coordination of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure critically ill patients, and their families, receive an optimum level of safe, effective care. You will also be responsible for supervising, leading and developing nurses and nursing practice within our Critical Care Units. You will undertake a rotation programme, across Critical Care, developing your transferable Critical Care skills and providing a comprehensive portfolio of experience. The interview process will consist of both panel and group interview taking place on the same day.

Main duties of the job

As a proficient Critical Care Nurse, the post holder will act to ensure the highest standard of patient care is delivered either individually at the bedside, as a pod coordinator supporting more junior members of the team or as the Nurse in Charge of the shift.

They will be an expert practitioner, role model and mentor and will participate in the education and development of Nursing and Healthcare staff. They will work closely with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, Matron and senior members of the Critical Care team.

A welcome subsidy of �1000 is available to all Band 5 and Band 6 Nurses, Midwives, ODPs and Radiographers taking up substantive employment with the Trust.

Person Specification



  • Registrant with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of UK.
  • Adult Critical Care Course Certification programme with 60 credits (or equivalent).
  • Degree or equivalent experience.


  • ALS Certification.
  • Leadership and/or Management training.
  • Specialist relevant clinical Courses.
  • Working towards masters.



  • Extensive critical care nursing experience, evidenced by completion of step 1-3 (or equivalent experience).
  • Evidence of a positive contribution to the ICU team. For example individual or group project work, link roles etc.
  • Awareness about the importance of evidence based practice and research in critical care.


  • Experience post adult critical care course.
  • oExperience in a specialised unit e.g. trauma, neurosciences, vascular and transplant.



  • Up to date knowledge of the clinical specialties relevant to patients (evidence based practice).
  • Knowledge of current NHS, professional and educational issues.


  • Understands the principles of Clinical and Shared Governance and the implications for practice.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of current educational practices relating to basic and continuing education.
  • Experience and qualifications in research.



  • Evidence of proficient clinical skills in critical care nursing.
  • Is a proficient role model.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to use initiative, solve problems and prioritise work.
  • Able to work in a changing environment and to actively support / promote planned change.
  • Demonstrating active participation and/or initiation of a quality improvement, service improvement and or audit project.
  • Demonstrates effective team work skills


  • Actively engaged in Clinical Supervision / Action Learning.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
