We are offering a split role Clinical Pharmacist post at band 7 working in both secondary care , Northampton General Hospital and Grand Union Primary Care Network. (General Practice Alliance, GPA, is the employer for the PCN)

You will have senior support for career development and progression at both NGH and GPA. All successful candidates will be eligible for the Centre of Postgraduate Pharmacy Education (CPPE) pathway and Independent Prescribing Qualifications (IP) to enable them to obtain the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to work in various patient-facing roles in primary care networks as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Within NGH: To work with the Pharmacy Clinical Team to provide a comprehensive Pharmacy Service throughout the locality.

To be accountable, under the guidance of the Principal Pharmacist, Urgent Care and Medicine for the Medicines Management Service provided to medical patients, staff, and directorate/division. To be a clinical specialist and support the Principal Pharmacists in providing a specialist Pharmacy Service to a directorate this may include prescribing, support work and developing initiatives.

Provide effective input into the work of the Hospital Trust and the Grand Union PCN, to support the achievement of both NGH and GPA vision and values.

This role is within one of the member PCNs, Grand Union, which consists of 5 GP practices.


Job description

Job responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the post include the following:

Clinical Services:

To provide information, advice and guidance on the safe, effective and economical use of medicines and to challenge poor practice.

To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety to enforce guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure standards are met.

To optimise medicines management by reconciling drug histories, performing structured medication reviews and using patients own medicines.

To detect, record and report adverse drug reactions to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and via Datix as per Trust Policy or via practice policy, as appropriate.

To record your clinical activity and to monitor the outcome of your advice. Within your PCN role to ensure appropriate coding is used for all consulations.

To monitor interventions in treatment to identify training and information needs.

To fulfil the requirements of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Good Professional Practice.

To participate in CQUINs and QIPPs within medical specialities in NGH.

To participate in PAF and IIF within PCN role.

To implement countywide and local prescribing strategies within the Trust and your practices.

Facilitate the expansion of the tools within EPMA within NGH.

To undertake validation duties in the dispensary within NGH.

To supervise, check and, if necessary undertake the supply of medicines in NGH. Technical checking is in place pharmacists make initial validations and have a professional responsibility to decide on the need for their further involvement in the supply process.

Speciality Clinical Pharmacy Role:

To develop expertise in speciality.

To obtain/maintain prescribing qualification and support speciality clinics and ward rounds as appropriate in NGH, GP practice and care homes. To optimise medicines through prescribing role operating within areas of competence and to support the patients journey.

Have a working knowledge of current practice and protocols within the speciality and how these relate to national and other guidance.

Provide a specialist clinical pharmacy service, including enquiry answering service for speciality-related queries from other members of the pharmacy team, wards and clinics the wider MDT in hospital and primary care.

To lead and support the development and implementations of medicine related guidance, policies and procedures within speciality area.

To lead and support on the auditing of medicines, by engaging with and utilising appropriate tools such as Ardens and Eclipse.

To support the process for new medicines being integrated into the Trust local use by Formulary and NPAG submissions.

To identify new opportunities for the development of pharmacy services and assist in the preparation of business cases to support these developments.

To attend clinical governance meetings as needed.

Assist in the production of quarterly reports summarising the directorates expenditure and identify cost improvements at NGH.

Management & Supervision:

To line manage/supervise and lead those staff allocated, undertaking appraisals, supervision and identification of training and development of their skills and knowledge.

To assist in the induction of staff into the service to help identify training and development needs.

To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety to enforce guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure standards are met.

To partake / lead in recruitment of junior pharmacists or other pharmacy staff as required.

Deputise for Principal Pharmacist when required

Education & Training:

To attend clinical pharmacy meetings and education/training schemes relevant to post. For example the PCN aspect will include training on the CPPE Primary Care pathway.

To take part in formal and informal training of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals in both settings. For example at NGH, including training for Technicians enhanced patient counselling skills and Medicines Management Technician training.

To be a supervisor on the Clinical Pharmacy Diploma course at NGH.

To supervise aspects of pre-registration training.

To supervise aspects of pharmacy technician apprenticeship training.

To provide information to patients, parents and carers on admission, discharge, outpatient and primary care clinics regarding treatment and medication to optimise patient concordance, particularly if there is a need to overcome language barriers.

To maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice to ensure a broad base of pharmaceutical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and judgement.

To take responsibility for own personal CPD by participating in education and training programmes to improve competence.

Other Duties:

To undertake duties elsewhere in the locality, if required.

To undertake on call duties for NGH

To provide a pharmacy service at weekends at NGH.

Person Specification

Education, Training and Qualifications


  • BPharm or MPharm degree.
  • Member of GPhC.
  • Achieved or working towards Clinical Diploma.
  • CPD portfolio.


  • Member of RPS.
  • Practice Certificate in Independent Prescribing.
  • Member of UKCPA, or other relevant specialist body.

Knowledge and Experience


  • Post-registration clinical pharmacy experience within hospital, PCN, community including at least four of the following specialties: Medicine or medical specialties, Care of the Older Person, Surgery or surgical specialties, Paediatrics, Medicines Information, Oncology, Haematology, Aseptics this would normally be achieved over at least a 2 year period.
  • Good clinical knowledge.
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Skill mix role of Technicians in Clinical Services.
  • Teaching, supervising and training staff.
  • Undertaken service improvement, quality improvement projects, audits, research projects.
  • Awareness of interface issues.
  • NHS arrangements eg IBCs, PCNs NICE CQC, Clinical Governance.


  • Experience of prescribing within a speciality to optimise medicines for specific patient groups.
  • Staff supervision.
