We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to participate in the delivery of a single integrated, high quality pathology service to the Trusts and GPs in the area as a hub and spoke model.

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified, experienced and HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to work in our busy Biochemistry Department at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust on fixed term for 12 months. Our forward looking and dynamic department employs modern equipment and automated processes, in a fully integrated blood sciences laboratory, to deliver a quality routine service to the Trust and surrounding GPs.

The successful candidate will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist (trainee will also be considered) and there will be a requirement to take part in the 24 hour shift working rota over 7 days. This includes evening, weekend, bank holiday and overnight work.

Main duties of the job

Qualified Biomedical Scientists, educated to BSc level and with HPC registration or working towards, are responsible for the performance of diagnostic tests on a wide range of potentially hazardous materials to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes.

Subject to contract and competency assessment, to work flexibly within the service needs which include, extended working day, weekends, Bank Holidays and duties which may be carried out to ensure a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.

To certify the analytical and technical validity of investigations, and liaise with medical and scientific staff of the department, other BMS staff within all pathology departments, nursing and medical staff within the trust, GP surgeries, Patients, and other NHS Trusts.

To undertake clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of diseaseOnce competent (after appropriate training) you will be expected:Co-ordinate, validate and authorise the day to day technical activities of a section of the laboratory to help with quality management activities of the laboratory such as audits, competency assessments and other activities as and when required.Contribute towards the training of technical, scientific and medical staff

To communicate highly complex and / or sensitive information to colleagues and other healthcare staffTo participate in governance procedures such as staff recruitment and appraisalTo contribute to the general management requirements of the department
