The midwife has a responsibility to provide holistic woman/baby centred midwifery care this may be leading midwifery care or working in collaboration with the multi- disciplinary team that advocates pregnancy as a normal physiological life event. The midwife will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for the women/baby. The role will encompass taking responsibility for the management/ leadership of the ward/department/ community caseload on a shift-by-shift and a rotational basis, which may include on call shifts. To collaborate with external agencies and consumer groups, and work in line with the transformation of maternity services (Better Births) Rotate to night duty and all areas in the Maternity Services.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development and implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for women during pregnancy, labour, post natal period and for the infant.

To inform and discuss with the Senior Midwife , changes in the condition of the mother and/or her infant.
  • Comply with procedures and guidelines within the Maternity department and Trust policies to ensure good standards of patient care.
  • By discussion and evaluation, a commitment to develop and support good clinical practice which is research and evidence based.
  • Act as a support for the Senior midwife in maintaining and developing a caring environment which responds to the needs of the mothers and their families.
  • Work within the NMC publications including Midwives Rules and Code Practice- Code of Professional Conduct
  • Is aware of his/her accountability and limitations
  • Extends sphere of responsibility as sees fit in order to ensure safe practice
  • Within a defined time span acquire competence in epidural, IV administration and perineal suturing.
  • To be fully conversant in dealing with complex midwifery issues
  • To act and seek advice with regard to any safeguarding concerns.
  • To have knowledge of disability needs.
  • To promote safe care and facilitate choice for women making use of our birthing units and promoting home birth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide midwifery leadership in all areas of midwifery practice, demonstrating autonomy, advocacy for women and an excellent decision making style.
  • Support the clinical teams and Band 7 Team Managers in the execution of his/her role.
  • To provide midwifery care, ensuring that sound up to date advice is given to women and their families in all care settings in accordance with best practice informed by NICE and Government initiatives.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION
  • Support student midwives and other healthcare professional as a mentors and sign off mentors and assessors to ensure that the hospital/community midwifery experience meets the required practical and educational standards
  • Facilitate parenting education to women during the antenatal /postnatal period

MANAGEMENT
  • Manage the care of women/babies within the resources available and ensure that all risks are minimised

RESEARCH/ AUDIT
  • Participate or lead in multi-disciplinary developments, projects and audits within the ward/ department, involving research, audit, and quality and risk management

SELF DEVELOPMENT
  • Maintain a professional portfolio to support revalidation
  • Attend all statutory/ mandatory study as designated
  • Maintain a continuous development programme utilising the appraisal process to identify professional and organisational aims and objectives.
