PLEASE NOTE: This is a fixed-term post for 12 months to cover maternity leave.

Are you an experienced orthoptist looking to develop further leadership and management skills? Are you a highly organised individual with a passion for the delivery of outstanding patient care?

We are looking for a Deputy Head Orthoptist to support the Head Orthoptist in the delivery of our orthoptic, optometry and ophthalmic technician services across Berkshire.

The role will include work at both the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and also the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Head Orthoptist is a senior member of the ophthalmology leadership team, who is responsible for the operational management of the orthoptic service across Berkshire in the Head Orthoptist's absence.

The postholder is also responsible for rostering of staff within the service, and works closely alongside the Head Orthoptist to deliver strategic objectives.

This post is cross-county and therefore the successful candidate will be expected to work in both the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and the Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide high quality orthoptic care and allied ophthalmic services within a multidisciplinary team for the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Responsible for the management, co-ordination, planning and development of the Orthoptic Special School Vision Screening Service.

To deputise for the Head Orthoptist and adopt the following roles in their absence.

Responsible for the management, coordination, planning and development of Orthoptic, Optometry and Ophthalmic Support Services in Berkshire.

Responsible and accountable for the budget management of the county-wide Orthoptic Service and Hospital Eye Service provided by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

To manage people and financial resources within these services in order to ensure the effective operation of the department.

To act as professional lead for Orthoptics within the Trust, advising on equitable service in Berkshire.

  • Post-graduate qualification
  • Teaching qualification
  • HCPC Registration
  • Involvement the extended role of orthoptists

  • Significant clinical experience in orthoptics
