Senior Staff Nurse - Coronary Care Unit (CCU)

Are you an already experienced cardiology nurse looking to progress your career further? The CCU at St Thomas' hospital is looking for a experienced nurse to join our friendly and supportive team to assist the Charge Nurse with the co-ordination of the unit and primary PCI service for the south east of London. We admit patients via a number of different pathways for a range of cardiology conditions including acute MI, heart failure and arrhythmia management.

We are comprised of six beds and care for a range of patients requiring level 2 care.

You will ideally already have experience with level 2 care and be given the opportunity to develop the below skills further:
  • Intra-aortic balloon pumping
  • Inotrope therapy
  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
  • Invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • Arrhythmia management
  • Temporary pacing
  • Arterial Sheath Management

The ideal candidate would have experience with shift co-ordination, experience mentoring both students and junior members of staff and hold ILS. You will have the opportunity to develop your life support skills and cardiac arrest management and would be fully supported to undertake ALS.

Main duties of the job

  • Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilstworking as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
  • Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products
  • Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
  • Act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

Person Specification



  • Demonstrates specialist expertise underpinned by theory acquired through CPD
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues. Knowledge of evidence based practice.
  • Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information


  • IT skills



  • Previous post registration experience within the relevant specialty
  • Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the speciality
  • Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Experiencing of co-ordinating a shift

Qualifications/ Education


  • Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
  • Mentorship/Teaching Qualification
  • Post registration qualification in (appropriate area of speciality)


  • Leadership qualification (e.g. LEO)
