  • To provide timely and individualised information and support to patients and relatives, carers, and members of the multi-professional team.
  • To support the centre lead nurse with the implementation, further development and evaluation of the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service for Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and across the community
  • To support the centre lead nurse to develop and extend the scope and aims of the service, and work with the Macmillan Cancer Information volunteers, service users, clinicians, cancer teams and the voluntary sector to identify and meet the broader needs of cancer patients in terms of information and support.
  • To support the centre lead nurse to manage the information centre, to support staff and volunteers based in the Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Unit and within the surrounding community and be responsible for the overall co-ordination and management of the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service and the staff and volunteers delivering the service.
  • To lead on the facilitation of support groups or events
  • To be responsible for the operational day to day management of the Macmillan Information and Support in absence of the Lead Nurse


Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the information centre and the volunteers
  • To manage information enquires to the service from a wide range of service users ensuring quality standards are adhered to
  • To be responsible for overseeing information management systems which allow to produce quarterly activity reports for the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service
  • Liaise with health professionals and other key stakeholders to promote and raise the profile of the cancer information and support service, monitoring and assessing gaps
  • To support and manage the Macmillan Information and Support associate in absence of centre lead and deputise for the lead at any meetings
  • To manage own workload within the constraints of the job dynamics, personal clinical knowledge and processes the ability to prioritise clinical workload

Clinical
  • To support the lead on the development of the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service
  • To provide timely and specialist, expert and individualised information and support to patients and relatives, carers, and members of the multi-professional team. This may be in person, by phone, email, or letter
  • Communicate complex information to patients regarding their condition and what support services are available
  • To provide and maintain a high-profile service within CRH and the surrounding community localities
  • To lead on the development of the personalised care and support planning in the centre
  • To contribute to the development of clinical protocols, guidelines, and procedures in conjunction with other members of the multi-professional team to address the information and support needs of patients, carers, and Healthcare Professionals
  • To identify learning needs of core clinical staff in relation to cancer information across Derbyshire and provide appropriate training for members of the multi-professional team and other stakeholders, both within and externally to the Trust
  • To plan, organise and participate in study days, workshops, and conferences etc., in conjunction with other specialist staff through consultation with the Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse and centre lead
  • To ensure involvement with Derbyshire Cancer Patients and Carers Forums, local patient support groups, and other voluntary organisations on the provision of accessible and acceptable cancer information, ensuring their involvement in the development and provision of the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service
  • To maintain accurate and up to date records on uptake of the service
  • To maintain confidentiality of service users where appropriate
  • To facilitate and deliver patient education sessions to a range of audiences
  • To lead on the centres existing and look at new social media platforms


Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Registered health professional (eg, nurse/physio/OT/radiographer)
  • Evidence of post grad study within oncology or palliative care
  • Assessor/supervisor training


Desirable

  • Advanced communication course
  • Specialist oncology or Palliative care degree


Experience

Essential

  • Recent clinical background in oncology or palliative care
  • Experiencing in communicating complex and distressing information to patients
  • Working in an acute hospital clinical setting with people affected by cancer
  • Facilitation of events, groups or educational sessions
  • Service development experience


Desirable

  • Experience in managing or supporting volunteers
  • Teaching experience
  • Audit experience


Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Broad knowledge base in oncology or palliative care
  • Knowledge in community and voluntary sector
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • IT and social media literate


Desirable

  • Data collection experience and skills
  • Skilled in presenting to groups of staff or patients
