About us
Geographically, the area is bounded in the North by Morecambe Bay, in the South by the Ribble Estuary, in the West by the Irish Sea and in the East by Bleasdale Fell.
With the exception of the coastal fringes, where hotel and catering industries predominate, with port activities in Fleetwood, agriculture is the major industry with the standard of housing throughout the area is reasonable, and in some parts excellent, there being a good mix of pre-war and post war properties. Costs compare favorably with other areas in the North West. There are many good schools including several well known Public Schools.
There are frequent train services to the major cities and the motorway system is easily accessible. Air services from Manchester are excellent and improving.
Blackpool has a resident population of 330,000 but by virtue of its being a holiday resort deals with 16 million visitors per year. There has been a steady increase in population during the last few years concentrated particularly in the popular retirement areas of Lytham St Annes, Thornton, Cleveleys, Preesall and Poulton-le-Fylde.
There is a high percentage of elderly in the population (21.88% compared with the national average of 15.1%) which places a heavy additional strain on hospital beds and the Community Services.
The birth rate in the District is low - the live birth rate per thousand population is 10.2% compared with a national average of 13.3%.
