An exciting opportunity have arisen as part of our service expansion for a highly skilled and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated team based at the University Hospitals of Leicester.

Main duties of the job

The laboratory handles approximately 65,000 surgical histology and non-gynae cytology cases per annum and provides a wide range of specialist tests.

These post is pivotal for the ongoing development of our service to meet the requirements for faster diagnostics and implementation of tests directly related to treatment options for our patients.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience of dissection in a busy teaching hospital. Candidates must be willing to work flexibly and be able to motivate and drive forward a team carrying out specialist work on a wide range of sample types. Candidates should have at least 5 years post registration experience in histopathology.

You must have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma and hold either an MSc or FIBMS. Consideration will be given to candidates with suitable experience without an MSc who would be willing to undertake the IBMS Diploma in Expert Practice (in this case Annex 21 would apply). You must also be able to demonstrate management / leadership experience either practically or through study.

Job responsibilities

  • Perform highly complex examinations of clinical specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, including interpretation of results, in an efficient, effective andsafe manner.
  • Provide expert advice and interpretation of laboratory investigations to healthcare professionals as required or for referral to specialist medical and scientific for clinical advice.
  • Ensure adequate levels of consumable supplies and other items required by the section are maintained using the appropriate procedures.
  • Employ specialist knowledge and technical skills to perform complex analytical techniques and procedures.
  • Lead on teaching, training and developing staff in the designated field.
  • To deputise for the Deputy Service Manager as required and perform any other duties covered by the post holders competencies after consultation and agreement with the line manager.
