We are recruiting for a Clinical Scientist who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in Biochemistry at East and North Herts NHS Trust. The post holder will assist the Consultant Clinical Scientist and the Consultant Chemical Pathologist in providing a comprehensive scientific and clinical advisory service within Clinical Biochemistry, including Point of Care Testing.

The successful candidate must be registered as a Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and have experience practicing as an independent practitioner. They will be supported to continue to learn and develop their scientific, clinical, and managerial capabilities to gain relevant higher qualification (FRCPath), and is expected to actively engage in this.

Main duties of the job

Bringing with you technical knowledge in Biochemistry, you will help lead a team of qualified staff and play a key role in the implementation and validation of equipment and new methodologies. Working closely with the Senior Management Team you will play a vital part in ensuring a high quality patient-led service is provided by the section and you will maintain and contribute to services provided by the Department in terms of UKAS standards, quality, clinical effectiveness, audit and training.

You will assist the Consultant Clinical Scientist and the Consultant Chemical Pathologist in providing a comprehensive scientific and clinical advisory service within Clinical Biochemistry, including Point of Care Testing. You will help to ensure that the service meets the needs of our service users and of nationally set quality standards including those set by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS).

They will be supported to continue to learn and develop their scientific, clinical, and managerial capabilities to gain relevant higher qualification (FRCPath), and is expected to actively engage in this.

You will assist the Consultant Clinical Scientist in the role of overall Pathology Laboratory Director, contributing to maintenance of quality standards across the Trust's Pathology disciplines

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • First Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise.
  • Masters Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise in speciality of Clinical Biochemistry.
  • Part 1 examination of Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath).
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of CPD to meet HCPC requirements


Desirable

  • Evidence of working towards Part 2 examination of Fellowship of RCPath
  • PhD


Skills (Scientific/Clinical/Management and IT)

Essential

  • Well-developed deductive and intuitive abilities
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to lead and co-ordinate audit activities and authorise corrective action
  • Ability to recognise patterns of abnormality in biochemistry results, relate them to clinical situations and provide appropriate clinical advice.
  • Able to use laboratory computer systems,
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to teach students, laboratory staff, nursing and medical staff
  • Ability to challenge established scientific and clinical views
  • Ability to cope with stress and work well under pressure
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage a varied workload
  • Able to establish and maintain effective networks with professional, clinical and managerial colleagues within and beyond the Trust.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Thorough knowledge of human biochemistry
  • Thorough knowledge of standard and specialised analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving.
  • Extensive knowledge of national professional and NHS guidelines relating to service provision and quality


Desirable

  • Sound basic knowledge in other areas of pathology
  • Understanding of how to set analytical quality goals and assess adequacy of current analytical methods.
  • To have expert knowledge in a specialised area.
  • Knowledge of managerial processes, resource allocation, and procurement within the NHS.


Other Requirements

Essential

  • Ability to maintain self-control in difficult and challenging situations and to take control of situations when more junior staff are in difficulty.


Desirable

  • Self-confidence.
