An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Specialist Integrated Haematology Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) of Great Ormond Street Hospital. The laboratory provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital.

The SIHMDS department is led by a Consultant Clinical Scientist and comprises of Molecular Haematology and Flow Cytometry sections each run by Lead Scientists who are specialists in their fields. This post is a 1-year fixed term non-rotational role within the Flow Cytometry section which provides an immunophenotyping service to the hospital and external paediatric sources primarily for the diagnosis and monitoring of paediatric acute leukaemia's. Other investigations include red cell, solid tumour, and platelet immunophenotyping.As well as providing a clinical service, the Flow Cytometry section also undertakes significant translational work and research collaborations.

You will hold an appropriate degree recognised by the IBMS and is registered as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC. You should also have completed the Specialist Portfolio/MSc in Haematology or demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work in a Haematology laboratory with a good understanding of Haematological diseases and a genuine interest in flow cytometry.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
  • To carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of scientific and technical excellence
  • To ensure analytical accuracy, and confidentiality of results observing the Data Protection Act, using the Pathology computer system
  • To analyse and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis at routine level
  • To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turn around times
  • To participate in performing the internal quality control and the external quality assessment schemes for designated tests
  • To participate and contribute to the departmental quality systems as directed by the Lead Healthcare Scientist and Quality Manager
  • To contribute to the efficient and effective organisation of work and staff within the flow cytometry section under the direction of the Lead healthcare Scientist
  • To keep a check of stocks, reagents and consumables and to order supplies as appropriate

  • Thorough knowledge of the working of NHS trust Pathology laboratories

Desirable

  • Experience of Quality management Systems
  • Experience / knowledge in Flow Cytometry/Immunophenotyping
