An exciting opportunity has arisen due to promotion. This is for a Band 6 Physiotherapy Rotation between our Stroke and Neurosciences Therapy Teams. If you have an interest in these clinical areas, then the post will offer a range of clinical opportunities to develop, as well as the support to engage in project service improvement work. You will develop leadership and enhance your leadership skills, through the supervision and training of staff and students.

UHCW is a designated major trauma centre and the neurosurgery team is central to the management of brain and spinal injury following trauma. In addition to serving the local population, the unit provides a national and international service for more specialised neurosurgical conditions including skull base and vascular surgery, hydrocephalus, neuro-oncology (resection of brain tumours using multi-modality imaging and awake craniotomy).

UHCW has recently gone through the process of Stroke Centralisation. This means that ALL acute strokes from Coventry, Warwickshire and surrounding areas are admitted to UHCW for assessment. This has led to an expansion of our Stroke Therapy Team.

Both areas include hyper acute / enhanced care units with patients who may be acutely unwell, or have complex respiratory needs including tracheotomies.

Main duties of the job

The role includes being on the respiratory on-call rota which supports nights and weekends. All required training will be provided prior to participation.

1. Manage a caseload of patients with varying diagnosis and or /complex needs, using evidence based/ client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in a defined clinical area.

2. Ensure development of junior staff through supervision, training and annual appraisal.

3. Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical practice & service development within area.

4. Contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust Physiotherapy service.

5. Take a lead for information management to ensure high quality data which is recorded, evaluated & reported in a timely manner.

6. Providing instructions to patients and their carers to enable them to achieve maximum functional independence.

7. Maintaining accurate patient records.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Be professional, legally responsible & accountable for all aspects of own work and activities, to manage clinical risk within own clinical caseload.

2. Carry a clinical caseload of highly complex patients, provide advanced therapeutic assessment & evaluation and provide detailed written treatment plans with patient cantered goals working within ward / department areas.

3. Work as an autonomous practitioner and member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programs,taking on the role of care Co-Ordinator and/ or vocational lead where relevant.

4. Carry out treatment, using a broad variety of modalities and clinical reasoning to allow selection of the most appropriate technique evaluating, modifying and recording allinterventions and outcomes & adapting them to meet the needs of the patient.

5. Use highly developed manual treatment skills requiring coordination, sensation & dexterity.

6. Produce and deliver an annual report specific to own clinical area & participate in the delivery of the Physiotherapy business plan.

7. Work in accordance with CSP & HCPC rules of professional conduct and within local care pathways, policies and standards.

8. Establish and maintain effective communication networks with patients, carers, MDT, other workers and agencies across health, social care and the private sector locally and regionally.

9. Promote awareness of the role of Physiotherapy.

10. Network nationally across other Physiotherapy providers and educators for the development of best practice & improve service delivery for patients.

11. Be responsible for own personal development in order to establish and maintain competence and fitness to practice as a Specialist Physiotherapist in own specialist area. To maintain a professional evidence based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HCPC.

12. Be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of physiotherapy students on practice placement within the Trust. Be responsible for the supervision/training and appraisal of physiotherapists with in your area.
