An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, self-motivated and pro-active Sonographers to join our dynamic evolving ultrasound team in a friendly hospital in close proximity to the Yorkshire Dales, Leeds and Bradford. Ideally you would undertake a range of general, gynaecological and obstetric Ultrasound examinations.

Previous experience in the following specialities would be advantageous but not necessary, MSK, vascular, small parts, neo-natal Head, Paediatric Hip, Nuchal translucency scanning or Breast Ultrasound.

We are recruiting 4.00 WTE Sonographers. Ideally you will be flexible in your working hours as we currently work extended days to 8pm, Monday to Friday with a commitment to the weekend DVT and EPAU service. Days and hours are open to discussion.

Main duties of the job

Sonographers are expected to provide an ultrasound service comprising of wholly unsupervised scanning sessionsTo work as an independent practitioner in Ultrasound working closely with the modality leads and ultrasound lead to provide a safe and efficient Ultrasound service. Sonographers are expected to undertake training where necessary support service provisionThe post holder must ensure consistency of medical imaging quality and accurate informative report writing. They must maintain standards of patient care to the agreed department protocols.They must always work within their scope of practice and maintain a high level of personal expertise.Be accountable for own professional actionsEncourage and participate in continual professional development.They must maintain professional registration.They must ensure that facilities are utilised to provide the best possible patient care and must support the ultrasound lead with implementing change where necessary.Safely operate ultrasound equipment and adhere to BMUS guidelines.Sonographers are required to actively participate in Departmental Audit, peer review, image review mentorship and training and take part in radiology REALM / discrepancy meetings. Sonographers are required to take part in weekend rotas to provide the provision of the Early pregnancy clinic and DVT clinic

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To undertake a range of Ultrasound examinations and report independently. Demonstrate a high standard of personal work and always work within your scope of practice.2. Work within the department scheme of work to refer under the ionising Radiation Medical Examination Regulations where indicated3. Organise day to day running of the areas they are working in, organise and manage health care assistants in Ultrasound where necessary to provide a safe and effective service4. Support locum staff working within the department, ensure their compliance with department guidelines and protocols5. Maintain consistent/ regular vetting of ultrasound referrals in line with departmental protocols.6. Actively manage patient appointments and ensure rooms are utilised appropriately.7. Liaise with Medical and other radiology staff to ensure patients are seen in a timely fashion, be prepared to assist booking staff to actively find space to accommodate urgent referrals.8. Actively manage room and equipment cleaning in line with departmental protocols9. To report equipment faults in line with departmental protocols and be actively involved with evaluating new ultrasound equipment.10. Where necessary and with appropriate training perform QA tests on equipment.11. Cooperate and assist Ultrasound lead in investigation of AEFS.12. Take part in annual PDR Reviews.13. Comply with HCPC codes of conduct.14. Use departmental PACS and RIS systems in order to accurately input data.15. To be familiar with and adhere to relevant legislation e.g. IRMER, Data Protection Act, Caldicott, Health & Safety at Work Act, local procedures for MAJAX and equipment failure.

Training, Education and CPD1. To mentor and support Sonography students and all staff on preceptorships or requiring support following prolonged absence in line with departmental preceptorship arrangements. Provide feedback to modality leads and ultrasound lead on progress. Support and mentor all students working within the Ultrasound department.2. Comply with mandatory training requirements and arrange personal training following discussion with modality lead.3. To help implement the Radiology Induction policy for both permanent and locum staff.4. Ensure the safety of patients and ensure their experience remains the focus of radiology services in line with the trusts right care values.5. Act at all times as an exemplary role model and leader for all radiology staff, supporting the trusts right care initiative.6. Lead, support, develop and maintain a working environment which encourages team work, mutual support and excellence in service delivery.7. Lead by example, motivate and support colleagues.8. If required assist with personal development reviews, this would be supported with appropriate training9. Actively take part in image review, peer review and clinical audit10. Take part in annual PDR Reviews

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bsc Hons Degree in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent.
  • State Registration.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)


Desirable

  • Accreditation with Fetal Medicine Foundation or DQASS to perform Nuchal Translucency (NT) scans
  • Recent demonstrable Continuing professional Development.
  • Attendance at a Breaking bad news Study day or equivalent
  • Qualification in computing e.g. CLAIT, ECDL.
  • Counselling qualification. Attendance on counselling related courses/study days.
  • Post Graduate module in breast, MSK or Vascular Ultrasound


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive Ultrasound experience in a wide range of Ultrasound examinations including General Medical, Obstetric, Doppler, Gynaecological, Transvaginal
  • Experience in autonomous working and independent Ultrasound reporting.
  • Experience in the training/supervision of Radiography students and /or Ultrasound students
  • Experience of audit and clinical governance.
  • Must have worked as a qualified sonographer in the UK and NHS to ensure that you have appropriate experience in all relevant areas of ultrasound


Desirable

  • Experience post qualification Bsc Hons Degree in Diagnostic Radiography
  • Experience in breast MSK and /or paediatric ultrasonography
  • Experience of 1st Trimester screening including NT scans
  • Experience of working at an intermediate care site
  • Experience in the training of other medical professionals e.g. Registrars.
  • Experience in the education of others by delivering information / presentations.
  • Experience in evaluation/critiquing and participation in audit/research to determine evidence based best clinical practice.
  • Experience in contributing to the implementation of evidence based best clinical practice.
  • Experience with using a Patient Archive and Communication systems. (PACS)
  • Experience with CRIS


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of the NHS Constitution & 'Understanding the New NHS'
  • Must have the knowledge to be able to interpret report and diagnose a wide range of conditions: Covering several clinical specialties including Obstetrics, Gynaecology including transvaginal, General Medicine.
  • Have the knowledge, skills and experience to communicate highly complex/sensitive and sometimes contentious information with patients, carers and Clinicians. This will include giving unwelcome and difficult to accept news to patients e.g. fetal death, cancer
  • Have the knowledge and experience to plan and prioritise patient centred workload, and own workload.
  • Have the knowledge to interpret broad Ultrasound imaging guidelines and policies and put these into practice.
  • Must be able to report and scan independently in Obs, Gynne and Gen med
