Our Operating Theatre Department have an exciting opportunity to join our well established theatre team as a full / part time Band 5 Perioperative Care Assistant in the Scrub, Anaesthetic & Recovery role.

You may already have experience in this role or be approaching qualification. We support additional skill acquisition through established part University Health Sciences study.

We require staff to cover a 24 hour service over a 7 day period, on completion of training however a work life balance roster may be accommodated through flexible working.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the planning, implementation and assessing of patient care.
  • Work as a flexible Theatre Practitioner in full support of the Theatre Team.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed accurately, legibly and confidentiality is maintained.
  • Maintain NMC/AODP Registration and practice within the Code of Professional Conduct (where applicable).
  • Perform operating department work in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to the guidelines and policies pertaining to the safe administration and storage of drugs within the department.
  • Participate in the provision of 24 hour cover of the department, as directed by the theatre sisters / Charge ODP and or Clinical Theatre Managers.
  • Participate in the interdepartmental rotation when necessary.
  • Ensure maintenance of good working relationships, communication and teamwork with all disciplines within the department and wards / department in the hospital.

    Job responsibilities

    SCRUB & CIRCULATING DUTIES:
  • Participate as a scrubbed member of the theatre team and carry out safety checks on swabs, instruments & needles in conjunction with a second person & reporting on the same to the surgeon.
  • Act as circulating member of the operating theatre team
  • Assist in the preparation and cleaning of the theatre suite
  • Assist with the safe disposal of instrumentation and clinical waste e.g. body fluids, tissue at the end of surgery.
  • Advising designated Person in Charge or Clinical Theatre Manager of any proposed changes in the order of the operating lists.
  • Assist with the safe positioning and preparation of surgical patients on the operating table as requested by the surgeon and anaesthetist
  • Assist in the care, labelling and despatch of specimens for laboratory examination.
  • Following successful completion of the internal file competency framework of Scrub

  • Practitioners moving to Surgical First Assistant on full outline of role:
  • Advise the Clinical Theatre Manager and or theatre sister Charge ODP of any problems, proposed changes to the order of the operating list

  • ANAESTHETIC & RECOVERY DUTIES
  • Carry out the preliminary checking of all anaesthetic and recovery equipment prior to the commencement of the theatre list.
  • Receive & identify patients along with all relevant documentation from the escorting nurse, ensuring all information pertaining to the patients identification and planned surgery is correct.
  • Provide skilled, specialised assistance to the anaesthetist peri-operatively, and in outlying areas e.g. A& E Resus, CT scan, Crash calls.
  • Assist the anaesthetist in the transfer of critically ill patients to other hospitals when necessary.
  • Report immediately to the medical staff any adverse changes in the patients condition or any other aspect of concern.
  • To participate in the post operative recovery patients at all levels of dependency.
  • Ensure patients receive appropriate pain management whilst in recovery. Ensuring they have the required competency based practice in the administration of IV & Oral Opiates and antiemetics as per trust guidelines
  • Ensure the safe and effective handover of the patients perioperative journey are handed over to the ward staff.

  • EDUCATION
  • Co-operate with the training and education of more junior staff allocated to the department.
  • Assist in the introduction and supervision of new staff to their duties.
  • Support the implementation of changes in policies and procedures following acquisition of research based knowledge.
  • Assist new staff members in accordance with agreed policies to new procedures and the use of new equipment.
  • Take part in a personal staff development review and ensure ones own clinical practice is updated.

  • ADMINISTRATION
  • Participate in the regular updating all mandatory training e.g. Fire, lifting & handling, tourniquet safety, diathermy, medical gases, infection control and resuscitation.
  • Assist in ensuring that agreed uniform policy is adhered to.
  • Report any shortfalls in the departmental stores or equipment to a senior member of staff.
  • Report to the Person in Charge any incident, accidents or complaints within the department.

  • PERSONNEL
  • Liaise and co-operate with other ward and department staff within the hospital.
  • Participate in the promotion of good relationships within the department.
  • 3. Participate in regular departmental meetings.
  • 4. Ensure strict confidentiality with regard to patients and staff at all times.

  • 5. To work in other areas within the hospital as directed by the Theatre Manager or Deputy

    Person Specification

    Experience

    Essential

    • Previous experience working in the Scrub, Anaesthetic or Recovery role in the Operating theatres


    Desirable

    • Previous experience in an acute hospital setting


    Qualifications

    Essential

    • RGN (NMC) / RODP (HCPC) registered


    Desirable

    • An Anaesthetic qualification that is AAGBI recognized SLIPs
    • Diploma or equivalent in Operating Department Practice
    • Sick childrens nursing


    Skills

    Essential

    • Can demonstrate basic level of clinical practice as a registered practitioner
    • Good communication skills, including observation, listening & reaction as required. Verbal & IT
    • Reflective skills
    • Experience of working in a team
    • Planning & organisation


    Desirable

    • Clinical practice in operating theatre, clinical competence in anaesthetic assistance
    • Clinical competence as a certificated Surgical first assistant
    • Evidence of attaining certification in Teaching & Assessment of clinical skills

    • Knowledge of the operating Theatre and an understanding of the roles of theatre personnel
    • Understanding of the NHS Constitution and its implications

    • An advanced level of understanding of the roles of theatre personnel
