We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, highly motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly team to help us deliver accurate high quality and timely Pathology services for patients and the clinical staff caring for them. We have both a permanent and a one-year temporary position available.

Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust Haematology and Blood Transfusion department has a well-equipped, highly automated laboratory currently using Beckman DxH900 FBC analysers, Starrsed ESR analysers, Stago coagulation analysers and Biorad IH500 for blood grouping.

The department has UKAS accreditation and HCPC / IBMS training status. Portsmouth supports staff development via internal courses. BSc / MSc and specialist portfolios are also actively encouraged along with CPD participation for all staff.

Our laboratories run a 24/7 service and there is a requirement for you to be flexible and able to participate, as part of the team which includes Associate Practitioners and MLAs, covering earlies, cores, lates, nights and weekends / bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

You will need to have the following:

• Substantial practical post registration experience of working in a Haematology / Coagulation / Transfusion laboratory preferably in the NHS.
• Successfully completed a Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Specialist Tx Practice or equivalent.
• Advanced working knowledge of various manual / automated techniques and analytical platforms.
• Sound knowledge and experience in blood cell morphology and blood group serology / transfusion.
• Competence to perform testing and validate results to defined protocols.
• Competence to examine and report Blood Film morphology.
• Experience of Quality Management Systems and ability to participate in the on-going quality programmes to maintain compliance with MHRA and UKAS standards.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and act as the lead role when required.

In addition the post holder will assist with the daily management of the section in which they are working and have a role in the training, development and supervision of other staff including trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, Medical Laboratory Assistants and other staff as required.

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week average including participation in a 24/7 shift system based on 8 hour shift sessions. Agenda for change pay enhancements will apply for non core hours.

The role of the Specialist Biomedical Scientist is to carry out investigations on samples of blood and body fluids to aid in the diagnosis of disease and monitor the treatment of patients by:

• Assisting in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data for the Trust, in accordance with relevant regulatory standards and requirements (including ISO 15189, and MHRA).
• To work as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists to deliver, within budget, a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.
• To demonstrate an exemplary standard of work at all times including the supervision, training and guidance of laboratory staff as required.
• To deputise for Senior Biomedical Scientists as required.
• To provide specialist advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.
• To assist in the ongoing achievement of departmental quality standards.
• To have attained specialist knowledge in Haematology through a minimum of two years experience as a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist working in a Haematology laboratory demonstrated by the possession of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent.
• To participate in the agreed working patterns of the department to provide a safe and effective service.
• To perform designated specialist role such as Health & Safety Co-ordinator, Fire Warden, Film Co-ordinator as assigned by Laboratory Managers.

Qualifications

Essential

• BSc (Hons) or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences.
• Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.
• Be able to demonstrate a broad level of specialist knowledge and practical experience by possession of an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Portfolio or equivalent.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.

Skills & Knowledge

• Ability to use highly complex automated equipment and associated computer software systems.
• Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and hand to eye coordination in repetitive manual techniques.
