West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife to join our highly motivated midwifery team as a Band 6 NIPE (Newborn Initial Physical Examination) Midwife. This is a part time post of 24.5 hours per week - working at weekends.

We are committed to providing high quality, woman-centred care and the NIPE screening service is an integral part of this process.

The hospital delivers high quality NIPE's to approximately 4000 babies a year.'

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be to:
  • Carry out a thorough Newborn Initial Physical Examination for all eligible babies
  • To refer babies requiring referrals, following the correct referral pathway
  • To actively promote patient choice
  • Support the vaccination programme
  • To work collaboratively with Midwifery, Ancillary and Medical colleagues
  • to provide care to babies
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and development of her/his own clinical skills.
  • To support the development of midwifery practice and new roles within theservice.
  • Ensure good communication with appropriate team professionals/agencies/clients using discretion and maintaining confidentiality and a level of continuity and quality of care
  • To maintain legible and contemporaneous records at all times, reflecting the management of care

Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with the maternity community and hospital teams, health visitors, neonatal teams and GP to deliver an efficient and excellent service that places the family at the centre of care. This will be to:
  • Maintain a high standard of midwifery care based on evidence-based practice
  • Give clinical guidance to other professional as required
  • Promote breastfeeding in line with the Unicef Baby Friendly initiative
  • Keep up to date with changes and developments in midwifery care and co-operate in any research projects applicable to the maternity unit
  • Maintain skills in all aspects of the Newborn Initial Physical Examination (NIPE) and hold an NMC Midwifery PIN number.
  • Teach and supervise student midwives, learner nurses and medical students,
  • The NIPE midwife should be able to oversee the daily running of the NIPE sessions in the absence of the NIPE lead.
