Job summary

This role is based in the acute tissue viability team (St Thomas' Hospital).

The Clinical Specialist Nurse is responsible for delivering evidence-based nursing care and making informed decisions. Through holistic assessments, they manage risk and provide patient-centred care in acute and community settings. They advise the multi-disciplinary team on nursing practice, empower patients to make informed choices about their health, and shape evidence-based therapeutic programmes.

In addition to their clinical responsibilities, the Clinical Specialist Nurse plays a managerial role by contributing to clinical standards and building relationships with Nurse Specialists. They actively monitor programme effectiveness, support practice integration, and communicate service developments. They also keep track of training needs and deliver educational sessions. The Clinical Specialist Nurse engages in research, evaluates practice effectiveness, and promotes evidence-based best practice within resource constraints. Continuous risk assessment and monitoring, along with maintaining professional development and following Trust policies, are vital components of the role.

We are offering a great new way of working, independent, autonomous and supporting the patients from admission to discharge where you will be working from 9am-5pm, 2 days per week.

Previous experience on a Band 6 post is essential.

Main duties of the job

You will be delivering evidence based expert nursing care with a high degree of professional autonomy on a daily basis by providing specialist advice to other health professionals and patients.

You will provide regular updates on developments and issues with the service highlighting issues in a timely manner.

You will evaluate practices to ensure interventions are effective, efficient and do make a difference for patients and colleagues.

The team aims to improve and support high standards of practice through clinical consultations, regular audits, development of guidelines and polices and by delivering formal educational training to healthcare professionals.We believe that training and education are key factors in pressure ulcer prevention.

Clinical

Managerial

Provide Input into the setting and monitoring clinical standards of excellence, to improve quality.

Establishing relationships with other Nurse Specialists to develop a support network both within GSTT and south London.

Seize opportunities to apply new knowledge to enhance patient care and develop the TVN service.

As part of the tissue viability team actively monitor the effectiveness of current therapeutic programmes and support the integration different aspects of practice to improve outcomes for patients and clients.

Regularly update tissue viability manager and HoN for ILS services and deputies of developments with the service highlighting issues in a timely manner.

Education, Training and Development

Participate in undertaking a training needs analysis of those involved in the delivery of a comprehensive tissue viability service across GSTT and plan educational and professional development programmes to enable these needs to be met.

Deliver training on 1:1 basis as well as formal training sessions. As part of the tissue viability team assist to create formal links with educational institutions health professionals from a variety of disciplines e.g. nursing, medicine and therapy.

Research, Practice and Service Development

Contributing to research/audit within the post and the speciality. Providing feed back at the trust safe in our hands weekly sessions.

Developing professional practice, by ensuring it is evidence based, appropriate and meets the needs of the client group and their carers.

Working with the health community advising on the implementation of the tissue viability services policy.

Evaluating practice, ensuring that interventions are effective, efficient and make a difference.

Embracing the current awareness of local regional, national and international perspectives on tissue viability care,

Promote the improvement of quality and clinical effectiveness within resource constraints.

Continuously assess and monitor risk in their own and teams practice and challenge others about wider risk factors.

Essential

• Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills in specialty.

Previous experience

Essential

• Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient focused care.
• Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice
• Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level
• Experience of delivering patient advocacy
• Experience of audit, research & evidence based care
• Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator

Professional/ Statutory Registration

Essential

• RN1 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.

Qualifications/ Education

Essential

• BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
• Your professional knowledge acquired at degree level will be supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level equivalent.
• Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience.
• Leadership course

Desirable
