These posts are designed to offer experience and training to doctors at a level between Foundation training and core specialty training.

Main duties of the job

These posts offer an excellent opportunity for doctors wishing to develop new skills or take time to consider their career path. These posts are flexible, have an assigned education supervisor, mentorship, paired learning scheme and access to career guidance. In addition, structured time for cohort learning with F3 doctors and their educational supervisors will be provided.

These posts will involve 3 x 4 month placements in different specialties to be allocated at a later date. Whilst we aim to provide you with your preferred specialties, we can only assign placements by the vacancies we have available.

About us

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The posts involve patient care on a day-to-day basis including admission and discharge, under the supervision of a Consultant. Supervision and teaching of more junior doctors and medical students is an important part of this post.

F3 will be allocated a consultant supervisor.

F3 will be encouraged to join the weekly teaching sessions and Grand Rounds. Study leave will be available to help candidates attend courses to prepare for examinations.

Specialty training will include care of inpatients, ambulatory care, specialty outpatient clinics, and portfolio-based procedures and competencies. Training will be supervised by a named consultant.

Completion of the post should help prepare the candidate for higher specialist training.

There will be opportunities for learning, education and audit time built into your rotations.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration


Desirable

  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree


Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • A Minimum of 2 years of prior satisfactory training equivalent to UK foundation medical training
  • 6 months NHS experience
  • Good history and examination skills
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis
  • Able to order appropriate investigations
  • Able to manage common medical emergencies.
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice.
  • Competence at advanced cardio-respiratory arrest
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague
  • ALS certification


Desirable

  • APLS certification
  • ATLS certification
