Job summary

The General Medicine Department in Leicester is inviting applications for a new post in Medical Education. This is an integral part of a wider strategy for the Emergency & Specialist Medicine Group to improve delivery of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Medicine. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to be involved in multiple projects to help deliver and co-ordinate medical education across the CMG and will also be encouraged to undergo a fully funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. Clinically the candidate will help provide senior cover of a medical ward at the Leicester General Hospital and take part in an out of hours on-call rota on that site. It is anticipated the candidate will work 50% clinically and 50% in Education.

This post would be suitable for any doctor capable of covering SPR level work. As a minimum it would be expected the candidate have 2 years clinical experience from initial qualification and have Part I of their MRCP. This post would especially be suitable for Specialist trainees (ST4 or above) who wished to go OOP or IM2/IM3 level Doctors looking to take a year out before progressing into IM3 or ST4.

They will work closely with and learn alongside the Medical Education leads for Specialist Medicine, the Chief Registrar and the Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

Duties and Responsibilities

Medical Education
  • Aid the Medical Education lead in overseeing education for all grades of medical practitioners in Specialist medicine
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the educational programmes within General Medicine. The exact nature of these is still being designed and the candidate will have an opportunity to contribute towards this.
  • Play a role in in delivery of undergraduate education for General medicine.
  • Support the facilitation of WBPA (dedicated shop floor teaching sessions and CBD \clinics)
  • Work within the Specialist Medicine Educational Team who will be responsible to the Medical Director and Associate Medical Director for Medical Education
  • Link with the UHL Educational strategy focussing on quality and governance

Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education
  • Understand the core principles and issues in Medical Education
  • The principles of learning
  • Teaching and Learning in the clinical setting
  • Curriculum Design, implementation and monitoring
  • Assessing the learner

Clinical
  • Provide Medical SpR level cover of a General Medical ward at the LGH
  • Contribute to a SPR rota providing senior medical cover out of hours at the Leicester General Hospital
  • Lead the cardiac arrest team at the Leicester General Hospital when on call

MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The posts are covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) as amended from time to time, and also such other policies and procedures as may be agreed by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Salary is in accordance with the current nationally agreed salary scales of the Medical and Dental Whitley Council.

N.B. It is possible that during the lifetime of this contract of employment, further, appropriate adjustments will be made to the working patterns for the post, in order to meet the requirements of the European Working Time Directive or for other reasons.

As this post does not have a specific set rotation, in line with the NHS Employers interpretation of pay protection, the post holder will receive confirmation of the terms and conditions of service (including banding supplement), only after a specific post has been allocated to the post holder. The banding supplement payable to the post holder will be the pay band applicable to the rota at the time when a specific post is allocated. Pay protection will not be applied from date of appointment.

In accordance with the Trusts policy on Hepatitis B and health care, appointment to this post is subject to satisfactory clearance by the Leicestershire Occupational Health Department.

General Medicine Work

Clinical duties and responsibilities:
Whilst on duty the appointee will be clinically and professionally responsible for their patients. It will also be their duty to:
  • keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition;
  • involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment;
  • maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time;
  • carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan e.g. the keeping of records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks, maintaining skills and knowledge.

The appointee will be expected to work flexibly and to co-operate with all reasonable requests to cover for their colleagues absences where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so. Where the appointee undertakes duties in accordance with this paragraph and such duties take place outside of their contracted hours they will receive either an equivalent off duty period or remuneration. Where this adversely impacts on the Job Plan and/or opportunities for individual doctors a temporary Job Plan will be agreed for the period of cover. Where covering is not practicable, the Trust will be responsible for the engagement of a locum, but the appointee will have the responsibility of bringing the need to the notice of the Trust.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to graduate and continuing medical education activity locally, regionally and nationally as appropriate and to participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.

The appointee will be responsible for teaching, assessment as directed, contributing to graduate continuing medical education activity locally, regionally and nationally as appropriate.
