To be responsible for managing and prioritising workload and to produce comprehensive independent reports

The post holder will work across professional boundaries to improve patient outcomes and take part in the training of others in the specialised field of ultrasound.

Main duties of the job

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from enthusiastic & motivated Sonographers to join our friendly & experienced team. Trainees also invited to apply

The four Ultrasound departments within UHB are located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital & Solihull Hospital -collectively known as HGS. Between all four sites that make up UHB.

At QEHB we offer a wide range of abdominal, renal, vascular, MSK & small parts scans, plus contrast enhanced scans. Part of our work is assisting in the timely & accurate scanning of liver & renal transplant patients we are an integral part of the largest European solid organ transplantation programme.

At HGS we offer a wide range of services such as 12 week Nuchal Assessment, F.A.S.P scans as well as general abdominal, small parts and gynaecological examinations.

As a Trust we are committed to developing our Sonographer workforce with a wide access to CPD & education opportunities. We support both Undergraduate & Post Graduate Education. We also support our Sonographer's with in house training.

Person Specification



  • *Educated to degree level or equivalent, have a post graduate accredited qualification in medical ultrasound
  • *Must be state registered



  • *Must have relevant skills/knowledge/experience in the range of ultrasound techniques which are required
  • *To possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner
  • *Highly specialist knowledge of ultrasound procedures
  • *An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.


  • *IT experience to use the necessary computerised reporting system and image recording system
  • *Must be prepared to assist with the development of the service and protocols
  • *Possess knowledge and understanding of the audit process

Additional Criteria


  • *Must be able to work independently and be competent to write a concise and accurate report
  • *Must be prepared to provide practical and theoretical training in medical ultrasound and take responsibility for countersigning reports for Clinicians, Midwives and Radiographers in training
  • *Must be prepared to continue with professional development to ensure a high standard of ultrasound examinations
  • *Must be able to work effectively in a potentially high pressured, emotive environment
  • *Must be committed to providing a high quality US service
  • *An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.
  • *Demonstration of innovation in the healthcare profession.
  • *Courteous conduct in difficult/contentious situations.
  • *Positive application of the radiographers code of conduct
