Job summary

This is a great opportunity for a enthusiastic candidate to further their Urology experience by developing their knowledge and clinical skills. The role involves regular elective operating, outpatient clinics, diagnostics (TP Biopsy, Urodynamics, Flexible cystoscopy) and full participation in a 1:7 non-resident on-call rota all under Consultant supervision.

Main duties of the job

The weekday daytime oncall is resident and involves ward round with the Consultant and SHO, performing emergency procedures under supervision and supporting the on-call and urology SHOs to provide excellent emergency care.

About us

The department of Urology is a member of the Surgical Directorate, well known in the region for providing excellent patient care as well as exceptional training for the specialist registrars and junior doctors. The Department of Urology enjoys close links with The Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH), with a weekly joint Specialist MDT for prostatic, bladder and penile cancers. There is a Specialist Renal MDT hosted by Frimley Park Hospital.

Job responsibilities

Elective activity takes place at Wexham Park Hospital and Heatherwood hospital. This is all done in a supervised environment with face-to-face, telephone clinics and diagnostic procedures. The operating lists focus on core urology, stone disease, female/functional urology, superficial bladder cancer and andrology.

There are weekly departmental MDT and xray meetings to discuss complex cases. Weekly departmental teaching is an opportunity to improve knowledge and work towards ST3 applications or FRCS Urol.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB, BS or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS or equivalent
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance - ensures patients are not put at risk
  • Understanding of the basic principles of research

  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes

Professional/Specialist/Functional Experience

Essential

  • 4 years post qualification experience of which 2 years must be in a urology/general surgery post at ST1/2 level or equivalent
  • Demonstrates experience of teaching and training ST1/2 or equivalent and F1s
  • Competent in basic procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking, etc.
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help


Desirable

  • Experience working at middle grade in a surgical speciality
  • Has participated in clinical audit
  • Previous Research experience
  • Ability to apply research to clinical problems
