Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join our busy General Surgery department at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) has arisen following a recent expansion of the general surgery servicers.

The department is looking for an experience Registrar (ST3+ or equivalent) in General Surgery to join the team. The post holder will predominantly work in the newly built Day Surgery Unit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide Senior Registrar grade for the newly designed Day surgery Unit (DSU) and support minor operations activity with the division. The role will also participate in shift basis throughout general surgery as when required and participate in the on-call Registrar rota.

The post holder will be expected to supervise and support SHO's and FY1's in service delivery, inpatients and day services. The post holder will provide a rapid response to A&E to facilitate the 4-hour trolley-wait target and during the on-call shift, will be available solely for emergency duties.

The post holder will be expected to run clinics with the support of the consultant body.

The department of general surgery is the largest surgical department at the hospital, incorporating the sub-specialty services of breast surgery, colorectal surgery and emergency general surgery.

The department is a national innovation site for enhanced recovery, providing shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery for patients. We also are one of the leading providers for hot gallbladder services.

Breast surgery outpatient assessments include a one-stop triple assessment in our state-of-the-art mammography unit. A range of day case and inpatient breast surgery, both malignant and benign, is carried out. The department of colorectal surgery offers endoscopic treatment, inpatient and day case surgical procedures.

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide Reg cover on a rotational shift basis throughout general surgery.
  • Supervise the SHOs and FY1s in service delivery, in outpatients, inpatients, and day services.
  • Provide a rapid response to A&E to facilitate the 4 hour trolley-wait target during the on call shift will be available solely for emergency duties.
  • Undertake outpatient clinics and operating theatre lists as directed by the consultants.
  • Participate in the Clinical Governance and Risk Assessment process.
  • Offer a commitment to both postgraduate and undergraduate General Surgery training within the hospital.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Take part in the care of patients attending the department, including examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Liaise with staff of other departments.
  • Maintain legible records.
  • Assist in the audit of various aspects of work under the direction of the Audit lead.
  • Recognize their own limitations and seek advice from the Consultants in their management of patients.
  • Perform related duties as required, including additional duties arising exceptionally from occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, and duties essential for the continuity of patient care.
  • Other duties as directed by the Consultant in Charge.
  • IT skills are essential to support the electronic management of patient pathways.
  • Dept encourages all junior doctors to be involved in development of guidelines in partnership with other team members.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • oMBBS or equivalent
  • oMRCS qualification
  • oHolds full UK GMC registration and license to practice
  • oUp to date Advance Life Support (ALS) and ATLS Certified


Desirable

  • oWorking towards a post- graduate qualification


Experience

Essential

  • oPrevious experience working in a General Surgery setting
  • oATLS Certified and up to date
  • oUnderstand the structure and functional principles of the NHS
  • oCare of the critical surgical patient skills (CCrISP) or equivalent
  • experience as registrar in general surgery


Desirable

  • oExperience in performing laparoscopic surgery
  • oExperience in supervision and education of junior doctors
  • oExperience of research and quality improvement
