Job description
Job responsibilities
Department of Anaesthetics and Intensive Care
The department is located on first floor of main building and provides supportive service to Orthopaedics, Trauma, Emergencies, Colorectal, General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Dental, and Paediatric surgery. The department offers acute pain service and actively uses ultrasound guided interventions and local Anaesthetic infusions through elastomeric pump to manage pain in ward. There is a chronic pain service led by an enthusiastic pain team.
In addition to weekly two session outpatient clinic, two full day theatre list for pain procedures is offered, with plans of further expansion.
The department also runs a preoperative assessment clinic and a high-risk maternity clinic.
It is an exciting time for the Trust currently as two new elective care self-contained theatres have recently opened, with plans for further expansion.
Critical Care Unit/ITU
The ITU complex is built on a nucleus plan and is self-contained, with a comprehensive range of facilities including Doctors and Relatives overnight stay rooms within the complex.
There are eight ITU/HDU beds, this changes with the dependency of the patient. The two isolation beds tend to be used for quarantine purposes.
Working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team are excellent with patient care being shared with other specialties. The Outreach Service is well established with very active and enthusiastic team of senior ITU staff.
ITU is supported by 24-hour critical care outreach service operating 7 days a week, and Respiratory team providing CPAP / NIV support in Respiratory ward adjacent to ITU.
Development of Enhanced Care Area for major post-operative patients is in progress and likely to go live later this year.
The department contributes to the National ICNARC Audit project and is a member of the Central England Network, which includes South Warwick, the Leicester Group, Kettering and Northampton General Hospitals. A separate Transfer Group exists. The Unit is recognised for training of ENB100 course nurses, and up to intermediate level training for Anaesthetic trainees.
OBSTETRIC FACILITIES
Obstetric care is delivered in the Obstetric Block on the George Eliot site. The Department at present provides Consultant cover for 10 sessions a week, 5 of these are elective operating lists. NCCGs take part in obstetric care at Registrar level.
The labour suite includes delivery beds, a dedicated operating theatre with full facilities for the administration of general and regional Anaesthesia. A purpose-built high dependency room serves mothers for complicated deliveries.
PAIN SERVICES
The Chronic Pain Medicine service having its own Unit is currently provided by one Consultant (another substantive consultant is set to join in August) within the Department, assisted by a Chronic Pain Nurse Practitioner, a Pain Sister, and Staff Nurse. Acute Pain Service is provided by two Consultant Anaesthetists and an Acute Pain nurse.
Administration/Secretarial Support
The specialty is currently headed by a Clinical Lead with leadership from a Clinical Director. The Directorate has a General Manager, Operations Manager, and financial departmental input.
The Anaesthetic Department has office facilities adjacent to the Main Theatre Suite, housing three medical secretaries providing cover for Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Acute and Chronic Pain Medicines.
Consultant Anaesthetists share six offices near Theatres and ITU, further accommodation is available for NCCG and trainees.
Teaching, Research, Audit and Digitilisation
Coventry is the Sub-Regional Centre for Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Renal Dialysis, Renal Transplantations, NMR Imaging and provides ENT and Ophthalmic in-patient services for the Warwickshire District. There are historical links with the Coventry hospitals, and junior Anaesthetic staff attend Coventry hospitals for training in ENT Anaesthesia.
Strong links have been formed with the Warwick Medical School and hospitals, with undergraduates attending for Medical, Surgical and Anaesthetic teaching, pre-registration junior staff being appointed from Warwick graduates. An interest in undergraduate teaching will be encouraged.
Anaesthetic SpR trainees rotate through George Eliot, Warwick, Redditch, Good Hope, UHCW, Heartlands and Birmingham Childrens Hospital as part of the Warwickshire School of Anaesthesia.
Department is part of multiple national research projects participation in research projects will be encouraged. The Trust has a strong Research and Development team that provides support to implement various research projects.
The Trust is amid a radical transformation programme to become paperless and will be implementing a hospital wide electronic health record. This mega digital programme will be led by clinical consultants of various specialities. Every speciality will have a digital lead(s) and time will be made available in job plans for the right candidate as per interest and need - new consultants would be encouraged to participate in implementation of digital transformation of the Trust.
