Job summary

We are delighted to be able to advertise a 12 month DCT 2 inOMFS with out of hours on call cover based in Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. The successful candidate would complement a department of 5 Dental Core Trainees, 2 Specialty Trainee, 8 Associate Specialists/Specialty Doctors and 9 consultants. The department provides Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, Restorative Dentistry & Orthodontic Dentistry for the Cwm Taf & Powys catchment area.

Main duties of the job

Dental Core Training Post in Oral & maxillofacial Surgery who will work under the direction of the consultants in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery. There will be daily contact with a multidisciplinary range of staff based on the ward, in the casualty Department, in operating theatres, Outpatients, from pharmacy and administrative staff.

This training and career development post will provide exposure to a broad range of Oral & maxillofacial surgery. There will be Hospital Consultation clinics for new and review patients under the supervision of either a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial or Oral Surgeon. In addition, there will be expose to minor oral surgery procedures, Day surgery cases and inpatient cases.

There will be study sessions for research, audit and publication activity. Attendance at relevant study days organised for local DF1 and 2 programmes will be encouraged.

Attendance and presentation to the Welsh Hospitals Dental Specialities Meeting is expected. Support for obtaining a postgraduate examination is provided.

The post is subject to regular appraisal by a named supervising Consultant, and monitoring of a portfolio of workplace based assessments and logbook of activity.

The DCT2 post is recognised for M.F.D.S, MJDF & M.R.C.S. One Study Session per week is timetabled. A proportion of these sessions will be dedicated to a programme of formal teaching

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BDS or equivalent recognised qualification
  • Have or be eligible for full GDC Registration at the start date
  • Be eligible to work in the UK


Desirable

  • Working towards or already obtained postgraduate qualifications (MFDS, MJDF or equivalent)


Experience/Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Must provide evidence of completion of UK Dental Foundation training or recognised equivalent or exemption
  • Have completed DCT1 training, but no more than 6 months of training in the year they have applied for by the start date of the post
  • Must not have undertaken 18 months or more Dental Core Training
  • Ability to work unsupervised during unsocial hours
  • Must have 6 months OMFS rotation with on-call experience


Desirable

  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Has publications
  • Has undertaken presentations


Clinicial Ability

Essential

  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and awareness to fully investigate problems
  • Capable of conducting operative procedures

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Flexible & the ability to work well in a team environment
