An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new Energy and Net Zero Manager position within the Joint Sustainability and Net Zero Team of the Barts Health NHS Trust (Barts Health) and Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT).

BHRUT & Barts Health are major providers of acute healthcare in North East London. Working in healthcare requires an adaptable approach and hence, in addition to building knowledge, you will be able to communicate effectively, be self-motivated along with the competence to prioritise effectively, coupled with the desire and ability to initiate and embrace new ideas. Barts Health and BHRUT deliver high quality compassionate care to the 3 million people of East London and beyond from six hospitals - St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City, including the Barts Heart Centre, The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, Newham University Hospital in Plaistow, Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, Queens Hospital in Romford and King Georges Hospital in Goodmayes.

The Energy and Net Zero Manager will be responsible for monitoring, reporting, and exploring energy efficiency and carbon reduction opportunities across s Barts Health NHS Trust (Barts Health) and Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) and driving forwards energy management best practices to support the delivery of Barts Health and BHRUT's net zero targets.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for coordinating energy audits, reviewing, updating maintaining the energy, carbon, and climate change aspects of Barts Health and BHRUT's environmental compliance register.

The Energy and Net Zero Manager will be as the energy and carbon reduction champion and will be responsible for promoting good energy efficiency practices and raising awareness about the consequences of climate change.

Job responsibilities

The Energy and Net Zero Manager will be an essential part of the Barts Health and BHRUTs Sustainability and Net zero team. The post-holder will be responsible for:
  • Providing specialist technical advice on energy and carbon management across both Trusts and support the delivery of the NHS netzero targets.
  • Conduct out energy audits in line with Barts Health and BHRUTs commitment to comply with all relevant regulations and meet the net zero targets.
  • Monitoring, analysing and reporting Barts Health and BHRUTs carbon footprint but not necessarily limited to energy management and consumption, heat and power generation, waste production and disposal, food and nutrition, travel and transport, biodiversity and physical built environment.
  • Work with external stakeholders on energy and sustainability linked to the Greener NHS objectives across North-East London ICS.
  • Collate and manage energy data required for compliance schemes and reports including UK ETS, DEC/EPC, CHP QA, NHS England and Improvement (NHSE/I) quarterly net zero returns, Trust annual report sustainability section.
  • Coordinate the energy and carbon management data required to support the annual Estates Returns Information Collection (ERIC) submissions, other statutory returns such as Premises Assurance Model Hospital (PAM) and the annual reports of Barts Health and BHRUT.
  • Coordinate energy audits and surveys to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and in line with the carbon reduction and net zero targets of Barts Health and BHRUT.
  • Identify initiatives and opportunities that will reduce the carbon footprint and optimise financial benefits to Barts Health and BHRUT.
  • As appropriate prepare business cases that supports the delivery of the net zero targets of Barts Health and BHRUT.
  • Provide specialist support to the Green Plan Steering and Site-Based Green Groups as well as the Green Plan Delivery Oversight Group.

Person Specification



  • Educated to Degree Level in energy management/engineering or engineering related discipline. or Equivalent qualification recognised by an appropriate registration authority e.g. certificate of technical competence in energy management.
  • Associate / Practitioner Level Membership of a relevant professional institution i.e. IEMA, CIBSE, EMA.


  • Post graduate qualification in a relevant subject area (e.g. energy management/engineering or engineering related discipline)
  • Full Level Membership of a relevant professional institution i.e. IEMA, CIBSE, EMA.



  • Experience of: oUndertaking research, analysing, extrapolating, and interpreting data oCollecting / collating information by using scientific equipment or techniques and reviewing/auditing and reporting performance
  • Experience of preparing funding bids, business cases and applications for energy and carbon reduction grants / funds.
  • Experience of developing or reviewing energy / carbon management policy or procedure.
  • Experience of Energy management in a large and complex organization (preferably public sector or NHS).


  • Experience of heat decarbonisation and the public sector decarbonisation scheme (PSDS) and low carbon skills fund (LCSF).



  • Highly numerate with experience of analysing complex energy and carbon management data and producing analytical reports for senior management and other audiences with varying levels of understanding.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (including the preparation and presentation of reasoned business cases). An ability to persuade and influence internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Able to prioritise, plan and manage a variety of commitments, balancing conflicting workloads to maintain progress and meet stakeholder expectations and multiple deadlines.
  • Good time management and organisational skills with ability to work on own initiatives and with minimal supervision.
  • Constructively challenge where areas are not delivering against performance targets



  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience of implementing, managing, and auditing energy management systems such as ISO 50001.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of the decarbonisation and energy efficiency principles.


  • Knowledge of the NHS Net Zero Targets, Green Plan and Health Technical Memorandum (HTM)
